Question about Hoover Hardware & Accessories
The vacuum caught on a shaggy rug, I turned it off and it smelled like smoke. Removed the brush cover and did not see any thing caught in the brushes. It now makes a very loud thumping, knocking noise. Not sure if it could be the belt - because this happened in less than five minutes of its very first use!

You need to clean your roller and replace the clutch assembly that drives the belts. poorly designed vacuum with many flaws.

Your belt is worn and stretched and so it is slipping on the motor drive shaft. That is why it is noisy and smells like burning rubber. You simply need to replace the belt. You can get replacement belts here:

You also need to pull off the yellow bearings from the end of the brushes (one on the brush one and one on the rubber one) and remove hair from the axle there.

SOURCE: The floor brush will not
I recently had a similar problem where the vacuum would turn on but the brush would not rotate. I could hear the motor turn on and the belt was in tact, but the brushes would not turn. I took out the brushroll and it would not turn by hand either. There is a white cap on one end of the roll and a black one on the other. Use a hammer and a punch (or sturdy screwdriver) on the metal rod from the white end to knock the metal rod out of the roll. There is a bearing and wave washer on each end. I cleaned all of the hair and gunk out of both bearings and it rotated much better. I actually bought a couple of new bearings (trade # 608 - same size as what's in rollerblades) and lightly sanded the surfaces where the roll and caps meet so I hopefully won't have to do this again for a while. I heard of people putting WD-40 on the rims of the caps, but I wouldn't recommend this because I don't think the plastic would react well to it. Hope this helps.
