Cookware: Is Ultrex worth buying? (by 3 users)

By Bouncy - usenet poster

Hello;
I am very interested in the Ultrex cookware that
is advertised on the HSN. But being the
researcher I am, I could not find the company,
the warranty, ratings, reviews, or anything about
the product on the Internet.

Until I find out some of the above Info I will
not purchase the products. Does anyone know the
web address of the company, any relavant reviews
of the product, and warranty info beyond just the
55 year blurb on HSN.

They make alot of lofty claims, such as being the
best cookware in America, metal utensils can be
used without harming the non-stick surface, etc...

Thank you for any info on the product,
Derek Sedillo

I have had problems with my Ultrex from HSN. Some of the comments left have mentioned a phone number to call. Can any one post the number? or let me know how to return my Ultrex. Thanks Violet

I HAVE THE COOKWARE AND I LIKED IT WHEN I FIRST BOUGHT IT BUT WITHIN A FEW MONTHS THEY BECAME SCRACHED AND AND THE LID FELL APART WHEN I WAS COOKING THE HANDLE CAME OFF IN MY HAND AND I WAS BURNED
I HAVE TRIED TO CONTACT HSN BUT NOONE WANTS TO BE RESPONSABLE FOR THIS PRODUCT. I WILL NEVER BY ANY THING FROM THEM AGAIN.
IF YOU ARE THINKING ABOUT BUYING THE ULTREX COOKWARE I WOULD ADVISE AGAINST IT.

I too have had my Ultrex set for many years now, which my mom purchased off of HSN or QVC; not sure. However, after many years of normal use; maybe 6 years, the non-stick is wearing away on the fryer with the raised nubs. I was just searching the internet for the ever-infamous "55 year warranty", and just confirmed that the company "Innova" is out of business and is no longer offering a warranty of Ultrex products. The (800) 767-5160 number, that is in the back of the warranty book will play that recorded message. So 55 year warranty really meant "or as long as we're in business". So I'm out of luck I guess.

I have a set of Ultrex Cookware that I bought in June of 2001, primarily because of the alleged 75 year warranty. I had to have the10" pan replaced in September of 2003 because the handle broke off at the weld points and the 12" inch fry pan replaced in December of 2004 because the non-stick coating was seriously wearing off. The return/replacement process was 2 to 3 months for each. In august of this year I wanted to get the 10" pan replaced again because the non stick coating was wearing off of the replacement. And the 12" pan is showing excessive wear, as opposed to their claims, again as well.

In both cases of wear on the non-stick coating it was just from normal use and I never used more than nylon netted sponge for cleaning and never used metal utensils in the pans.

When I discovered that the phone numbers I had for Ultrex no longer worked I went onto the HSN site where they state, “We regret to inform you that Innova is out of business and is no longer supporting the warranty of Ultrex product."

Innova probably went out of businesses because in January 2003 the CPSC urged them to replace about 8700 Ultrex Thermal/Double Wall frying pans because a number of them had exploded.

So, I would not recommend Ultrex to anyone at all. I will never be fool enough to again believe any claims made on HSN.

I suggest you go to the library and check the cookware report in the December 2005 Consumer Reports magazine before buying your new cookware. That's what I'm using to replace my Ultrex.

It is good cookware, but the thick plate bonded to the bottom does not extend
all the way to the sides of the pans. This is not a problem if using an
electric stove, but when using gas, the heat flows across the bottom of the
thick plate, then on to the thin stainless steel part of the pan. The thin
stainless steel heats up extremely fast relative to the rest, and food will
burn at the edges of the pan.

I have seen the Ultrex cookware work very well on an electric range, but on
my gas stove, I am very displeased with the uneven heating at the edges. I'm
tempted to borrow the thermal imaging camera here at work and measure the
heat gradient.

QVC sell sets similar to HSN's Ultrex, but the thick plate bonded on the pans
extends all the way, and slightly up the edges of the pans. A better design
IMHO.

I have Ultrex cookware and I love it. In fact I just added an additional 3qt
saucepan, 6qt pressure cooker and some bakeware to my set. Everything they say
on homeshoppers is true. Metal utensils will not cause the coating to come
off. As far as the warranty goes when I received my initial set the small fry
pan had a small dent in it. I called the 1-800 number and they replaced it no
problem and I even got to keep the dented one. Also one handle was broken on a
lid and they sent a new one within days.

I don't know about the claim of being the best cookware in America, but I know
I will never buy another set of cookware. The price in fantastic compared to
those expensive "designer" brands. As far as metal utensils not harming the
non-stick - I have used a sharp knife to cut chicken up in my large fry pan and
have had no problem with the coating flaking or coming off, but it does leave a
mark.

I am a basic cook, not a professional and the above is just my opinion.
