It's quite a process to remove a starter on a sportster. I changed one for my friend on his 03 sportster. You have to take alot of stuff off to get to the bolts that hold it on. Can I suggest getting a service manual for the bike. Trust me it's worth its weight in gold. I've done alot of work on my sportster and my friends sportster and would never attempt anything without the book. As far as the starter, From what I remember, I had to remove the exhaust pipes then the primary cover, and I'm sure there were more parts, but you need to know what gaskets you will need to replace. Good Luck. And go get the book. I got mine at Barnes and Noble. and my friend got his at the Harley dealer. Have fun.

How do i replace a starter on a 2005 harley 1200 sportster

Disconnect the battery and then the wires on the charger. Drain the transmission (left cover). After that, you can remove the shift lever connection and the clutch cover. Disconnect the clutch cable from the clutch assembly. Now you can remove your complete primary cover. After all that you will want to remove the two screws that hold the starter to the engine. Then simply put everything back in the reverser order using all new gaskets and seals and fill the transmission back up w/the proper amount and weight of oil.

What are the basic procedures for removing the starter on a 2004 HD Sportster 1200 custom?

First disconnect the battery negative cable. Then drain the transmission/primary and remove the primary cover and then remove the battery cable at the starter solenoid and the solenoid wire and then undo the starter mounting bolts in the primary case and remove the starter from the right side.

I have a 1200 sportster 1200 carborated evo and the speedo quit working . Do I need to replace the ecm or is there a fuse for it????

Hi Anonymous, try cleaning your speed sensor located on top of the transmissions right side between the top cover and the chrome starter end cap on Twin Cams and on top of the engine case between the rear cylinder and the starter motor for Sportsters. Remove the the bolt that secures the sensor and pull it out of the transmission. Inspect sensor for obvious damage and repace if necessary. If sensor has no damage then wipe clean any obvious contamination like micro fiberous material with a clean rag and reinstall, torque bolt to 8 ft lbs. Cant get side casing off to get to starter motor out on my harley 1200 sportster

Take the derby cover off. Remove the small spring and the lock nut for the clutch adjuster. Turn the clutch adjuster screw clockwise while at the same time gently pull the cover off. This should do it.

How do you take out the starter?Does the engine has to be taken off the frame?.

No, the engine does NOT have to come out of the frame.

First, disconnect the battery. Drain the primary cover, remove the shifter, foot peg, loosen the primary chain adjuster under the outer cover, whatever needs to be removed depending on your model Sportster to get the primary cover off.

From the right side of the bike, remove the exhaust system and whatever you need to remove to get the starter off. Disconnect the large battery cable and the single wire from the starter.

Back on the left side, there are two large bolts just above the clutch assembly, remove them. They may be different lengths so watch for that. Remove the starter.

Good Luck
Steve

1997 Sportster won't start

Check the battery, try jump starting with another battery or power source, removing the plug is reducing the compression making it easier for the starter to spin. I suspect your battery or starter doesn't have the jam to spin the motor.
