NEW ROHM BH1414-1417 PLL CHIPS...ANYGOOD?

These chips exist from year 2000 or 2001. I did get free samples on that
time, and they sent me 5 BH1415 and 5 BH1416 plus datasheets on paper. I
still have stored somewhere a PCB I made for testing purposes and i do
remember it did sound just right, maybe less sensitive to noises as the old
BA1404 and the RF was cleaner but not "broadcastable". Stereo separation can
be improved Greatly by capacitively coupling a tank circuit tuned to 19KHz
on pin 19 of BH1415/6/7F.

If they are good for a few meters, then they should be good for any distance!

You simply add amplifiers, it's all class C anyways!

And how do you know they crap? Have you built up a test board with
one?

They're the same crap, unfortunately. Designed for personal use, a few meters.

Tried them, and they're the same old rubbish. Lots of noise and spurs, and
poor separation. Don't bother. They're OK for their intended use - as
"personal" transmitter ICs to allow a portable CD player to be used in a
car. They are simply NOT suitable for broadcast use.

You can get MUCH better results with a few CMOS chips, a couple of analogue
ones and a few transistors. However, if you don't have the design
experience of the necessary test gear, you're MUCH better off buying a
competent kit or ready-built.

They are crap because they generate close-by in-band spurs that can't be filtered out
with a low pass filter. This can easily be radiated in the air band and elsewhere.

Go ahead, amplify them: the FCC, aviation guys and police will come looking for you.

I've put one of those gadgets on a spectral analyzer. Its crap.
