25357672791 Kenmore S/S will not auto defrost

I am tryng to find three things, the timer the defrost timer and the heater. I am not afraid to tear into it and have pulled off the freezer compartment panel but I don't see anything that could be it.

I would like a schematic/exploded view to locate these items. I have the wiring diagram already.

Thanks a ton. It (timer)was hidded pretty well behind a gusset. The problem ended up being the defrost thermostat. Looks like the ice maker had been dripping on it because it had rusted thru inside the contacts. Also a screw for the fan to the fridge had rusted thru. But $12.25 and a couple hours I have a fridge again.

You could disconnect the power to the defrost timer or the heating element itself. I suspect that accessing the timer would be much easier that the heater - but I don't know which model fridge you have.

If the ice is covering the whole evaporator coil then you have abad defrost problem. The defrost system consist of a defrost timer, a bi-metal thermostat and defrost heater/heaters. If the machine is running non stop chances are its the timer thats bad, but also look at the bi-metal thermostat to see if it is disfigured(the top will look popped out and swollen). Last thing is to check for continuity in the defrost heaters. All three parts are fairly cheap and from my experiance chances are its the timer or bi-metal thermostat.

three things you have to check your defrost timer, your defrost thermostat, and your defrost heater you would need to use a multimeter on all three of these and check for continuity between each side of the terminal ends the one that gives you no continuity is the one that you would need to replace hope this helps

Refrigerator will not defrost

Remove the kick plate grill at base of refrigerator and turn the timer clockwise slow until compressor stops. That should be beginning of the defrost cycle. After a few minutes look inside freezer or listen for crackling or hissing noise. That should indicate defrost. After 25 minutes if it does not restart then turn again until it restarts. Replace defrost timer. Let me know what happens, Thanks Sea Breeze

It is not cooling as it should like a refrigerator. As if the fan is on.

How to check everything
http://www.acmehowto.com/howto/appliance/refrigerator/refrigerator.php
If the evaporator coils behind the back panel of the freezer are icing up because of auto defrost failure that will stop the circulation of cold air and eventually affect the freezer too.

check defrost timer, defrost heater, defrost thermostat. In most newer models the timer has been replaced by an electronic control board. If the heater and thermostat are ok it’ll be the control.

You can turn the defrost timer till it clicks and everything shuts down. The heater should now come on. If it does, replace the timer. If it doesn't, check the heater and defrost thermostat. Turn the timer again till everything starts back up to end the defrost cycle.

Kenmore Coldspot EM5119829. The Freezer works

The fridge gets its cold air from the freezer through a vent(damper) between the freezer and fridge. The fan in the freezer blows air through it. There is a flap you adjust with the fridge temp. control. Make sure it's opening and closing when you adjust the fridge temp

Should be around 10 degrees.

Freezer not defrosting

The reason it is not defrosting is one of three things. First and most likely is that the Defrost Thermestat (aka BiMetal) is open and needs to be replaced, secondly it could be that the defrost timer is bad and lastly the heater can be bad. The bimetal and heater are found behind the back panel in the freezer section. The time is usually located near the controls in the fridge section. I would need you entire model number to tell you exactly where it is. To replace the either part is fairly straight forward. With the full model number I can walk you through the easiest way to test each part.

Kenmore sideby side fridge

You have a defrost system problem. Defrost is controlled by a timer which energizes the heater circuit. The heater circuit has a radiant or cal rod type heater which melts the frost from the coil. When the coil reaches a temperature where all ice would be gone a termination switch opens and shuts of the heater. The timer will continue to run until defrost time expires (18-22 minutes).

If you can locate the timer there is a clutch head screw to advance the timer to the defrost position. Turn the screw clockwise SLOWLY until you hear one audible click. The heaters should come on and defrost take place. If the unit restarts after the 18-22 minute period the timer is good, if it does not restart advance the screw to a second audible click and it will restart.
If you had to turn the timer the to second click to get it started cooling replace the timer.

If the unit restarted after the 18-22 minutes and defrost did not happen your problem is in the heater circuit. This would be an open heater or bad defrost terminator switch. To access the heater and defrost terminator the back panel in the freezer section must be removed. With an Ohm meter you can check the heater to see if it is good.
