Need rec for hi-fi amp repair

By Cornish - usenet poster

I have a Kenwood KA-880D integrated amplifier, about 15 years old.
It's a superb amp, and sounds wonderful. Lately, though, the
"balance" knob has become scratchy. You push on it with your finger,
and the left speaker comes on and off.

Can anybody recommend a good guy to look at it? Some of these places
charge $50 just for a diagnosis.

DO NOT USE ALCOHOL!!!!! (or, as someone will probably recommend, WD-40)
Don't bother with Radio Shack tuner cleaner either.
This will ruin the pots (potentiometers)!
If you're gonna take this approach, get some Caig DeOxit spray (available
at electronics parts stores or through the mail/web) and do it right.

I rec. that you take off the casing yourself, and purchase a can of "air"
and some alcohol and cotton swabs. The "scratching" sound is simply dirt
built up on the contacts. Don't hesitate to even spray the alcohol into the
gaps of the switch to "rinse" the dirt out. The alcohol will evaporate but
not before taking the dirt out with it. Be sure you have the unit unplugged
at this time. Try fixing it yourself, then if you can't get to it and it
seems like too much, take it in. That is a very minor, and easy fix.

I like Mr Wizard on North Loop

I think its 18$ to look a TV or VCR so an amp should be similar

I recommend Mr. Wizard's also. It's on North Loop, just off of Burnet.

Mike at Austin Stereo Service on Burnet Rd.

I don't remember what his diagnosis fee is. He maybe one of the guys who
charge $50 for a look.
If you are looking for a free estimate, look elsewhere. Best Buy, maybe?
