Question about Canon PowerShot G9 Digital Camera

1 Answer

My Canon G9 was working fine but now movie clips are playing correctly when viewed on the camera's LCD screen but when downloaded to my laptop the image aspect ratio is incorrect and the picture looks squashed. Any ideas?

I beleive that your issue is a setting in the program you are using to view the video. the camera will never skew a video. you may want to change the aspect ratio in the camera to match your viewer, but you should at least be able to set the viewer to maintain aspect ratios on video viewing. try viewing the videos with a different program. i.e. if you are using windows media player, try it with quicktime and see what happens. good luck

Camera won't turn on. Flashes red and orange lights by the view finder and blue at the s button. Battery is fully charged. Just use the camera the other day and it worked fine

The Canon G9 has a design defect, two screws fall out inside the camera and short out the fuse. If you've never had it fixed for no power before this is most likely what has happened to your camera.

Do a Google search for "canon g9 no power repair" and you will see a full repair service including return shipping of your camera for just $85.

Hope this helps!

My Canon G9 display screen has stopped working. It can view an image but does not work as a view finder!

Press the "DISPLAY" button until you get the display you wish. You can choose the information you want overlayed on the image in the custom display settings, see pages 55 onwards in your user manual.

Video playing in fast forward with no sound

This is a really simple problem and easy to solve.  Unfortunately the videos you've recorded cannot be changed back because they have been recorded in Time Lapse mode.
With the camera switched on in Video Mode turn the control dial on the back (this is the dial to the right of the LCD screen).  This will change the settings from TIME LAPSE to STANDARD.  There are actually 6 different modes but the best one for normal videos is STANDARD.  There is a HIGH RESOLUTION setting,  however these record fewer frames per second (fps) so whilst the quality is better per frame,  there are half the amount of fps so the the movie will look at bit jerky.
It's really easy to accidentally twist the dial when holding the camera,  so always check the icon in the top right of the LCD before recording to make sure its just a yellow camera in a yellow square.
This should be problem solved for all future recording.

Can't transfer video from Camera to the laptop

I phoned canon with a similar problem.
Poss reasons: 1 A clash between codecs - try removing as many codecs as poss then installing something like Ace mega codecs (this did not work for me). 2. Has the card been formatted on the computer ? I have since reformatted my card using low level format option on the camera. It has worked fine with 2 video clips I tried today - but I still cannot play my earlier problem files.

I have a canon SD 580. When I playback the video clip it's always in fast forward mode and I can't play it normal speed. Any help?

Make sure you are shooting your movies in "Standard" mode. If you have the mode set to something else, especially "Time Lapse", the playback may not match 'natural' motion.

In any case, you can control the speed of the playback. When you first enter the movie playback mode, there should be a movie control bar along the bottom of the LCD. Instead of the "Play" button, select the "Slow Motion Playback" button (single arrow with single bar next to the normal Play button), and control the speed with the left or right arrows on the multi-controller.

Playing Back Movie Clips
You can play back the recorded movie clips on the LCD monitor screen. However, the
sound recorded with movie clips can only be played back on a computer.
1. Press the button.
2. Use the four-way controller () to go
through the images until the movie clip you
want to play back is displayed.
To view the previous image, press the
four-way controller ().
To view the next image, press the
four-way controller ().
3. Press the button to start playing back
the movie clips.
To pause or resume movie playback, press the button again.
