Question about Dell Computers & Internet

"Router settings are OK What do I do on the computer to set up wireless" network at home,I've gone into control panel and connections and it has 'Broadband' saying not connected and below 'Lan or high speed internet'connected Currenly using Ethernet cable.I used to have an aerial icon in the task bar showing If I was connected and the strength of signal.System did crash so could hard drive have lost drivers ? this is where I get totaly lost Many Thanks in Advance !

    Hi, its a Dell Dimension 3100 Desk top.The router is a Billion 7202G & has worked fine wirelessly 3 months ago before the crash(I had to reinstall the OS & Drivers)

    Hi just wondering why Signal strength Icon is not showing in task bar,I've disabled firewall for LAN but still says Firewalled faintly next to LAN setting picture,just want to make sure before I disconnect Ethernet cable ? Regards David

WINDOWS FIREWALL

THE FIREWALL IS NOT ALLOWING THE NETWORK AND THE COMPUTER TO COMMUNICATE WITH EACH OTHER

How to resolve "Limited Or No Connectivity Errors" in Windows


When attempting to set up or make network connections on a Windows computer, you may encounter a Limited Or No Connectivity error message similar to the following:
Limited or no connectivity: The connection has limited or no connectivity. You might be unable to access the Internet or some network resources.

This message can result from any of several different technical glitches or configuration problems. Follow these steps to resolve Limited Or No Connectivity errors in Windows.
1. Determine whether your network access is functioning properly (that you can reach local network resources and the Internet). If you are using a broadband Internet and Windows XP Service Pack 2, this message is often a false error report. See Microsoft Knowledge Base article 892896 for details on how to work around this error appropriately.
2. If your network access is non-functional. continue to the following steps.
3. If your computer connects to the network through a broadband router , resetting (powering off and on) the router may resolve the issue. If not using a broadband router, or if resetting your router only temporarily resolves the issue and the error message re-appears later, continue to the following steps.
If connecting to your network using Wi-Fi and using wireless security, your WEP or other security key may not be set properly. Check the wireless security configuration on your computer's network adapter and update if it necessary.
4. If connecting to your network using an Ethernet cable, your cable may have failed. Temporarily replace your network cable with a new one to determine whether this resolves the issue.

The major  causes for a slow Internet connections. A poor-performing connection can be caused by broadband router configuration issues, wireless interference, or any of several other technical issues with your home network. Follow these steps to diagnose slow Internet connections.
 1. Broadband Router Settings
As the centerpiece of a network, a broadband router can be responsible for slow Internet connections if configured improperly. For example, the MTU setting of your router will lead to performance issues if set too high or too low. Ensure your router's settings are all consistent with the manufacturer's and your Internet Service Provider (ISP) recommendations. Carefully record any changes you make to your router's configuration so that you can undo them later if necessary.
 2. Wireless Signal Interference
Wi-Fi and other types of wireless connections may perform poorly due to signal interference, which requires computers to continually resend messages to overcome signal issues. Household appliances and even your neighbors' wireless networks can interfere with your computers. The light is green on the plug in the outlet but no pictures show


Well in this case what we can try is to check the connectivity and the signal strength of your wi-fi connection.
If you are using a router then try change the channel , the mode and the security setting's on it.

How do I network my dell desk top and my dell laptop


If you are planning on networking two computers or more I highly recommend purchasing a wireless router. Once you have a wireless router make sure that you set your network connection settings, your Local Area network or Wireless (whichever you are using), to DHCP. Connect your system to your router and normally that's it. Also normally with a router it would also come with a CD. For setting up your network you could also use that for easy setup.

You should be able to go into Control Panel -> Network and Sharing Center and select Setup a connection or network to bring up a wizard that will guide you through the process of setting up your wireless connection.

Restricting nosey userson a home network


Do not share any files on your computer:

My Computer
Right click on C: drive or D:, etc...
Properties
Sharing

Make sure your files are not shared

Also do this:

Start:Programs:Accessories:System Tools:Disk Clean Up
Check everything except the compress old files

Also,

Keep all of your saved viewing materials in one main folder.
Right click on folder select properties
check hidden and OK
Open Windows Explorer, not Internet explorer
Open tools//folder options//view
Select "do not show hidden files and folders"

Do this when you are done browsing and go back to show hidden files when you are back on your computer.

Clear your documents:

Start//Settings//Taskbar and Menu Settings//
Select start menu//customize
select clear

you will need to open a port on the router first. Maybe 8080 once you get that set you will type the WAN ip and the port number. It will look like this: http://165.123.123.0 : 8080
it will then ask for a username and password.
