SOURCE: My router doesnt seem to be Broadcasting the wireless connecition!

it may be that the router is not assigning ip addreses properly, and is duplicating the ip address on all pc's. or you have done the windows diagnose and repair or detect problems. Go to the properties of each wireless card in control panel>network connections and on the TCP/IP line click propertes again and ensure obtain ip address automatically is checked. Also go into the routers settings and ensure DHCP is enabled to give all pc's an automatic ip address. Restart all pc's and your router (not Reset) and you should get renewed ip addresses and be able to connect.

SOURCE: Connecting Laptop wireless and Desktop wired to the router

Do you need to see the desktop or just share folders from each other? If the latter then you need to do the following:

Use Windows Explorer and select a folder you want to share. Right click and select sharing and security.

On the sharing tab click on Share this folder. Enter a share name ( I like to enter the PC name _folder name; Rick1_Downloads)

Click on Permissions. If your ok with everyone using the PC's and Laptops having access then highlight Everyone and click on Full Control.

Do this on each PC and Laptop.

That should be it or darned near close.

Power cord
RJ-11 telephone cable coming from a splitter or the extn. line of your landline phone.
Ethernet cable coming from your Desktop/Laptop connecting RJ-45 port
Most standard ADSL modems have four/five lights in the front :
Power light to indicate electric power to the modem.
ADSL light indicates the status of ADSL sync. When the modem is synchronized with the ADSL line card at the other end of the circuit/loop, the DSL light will be steady green.
LAN light will glow steady green when the modem detects a successful link to a computer or router ethernet port.
ACT i.c. Activity light glows when the modem is sending and/or receiving data on the lan and wan. It will vary between very slow to fast flashing and steady green to indicate lan/wan traffic.

Signal indicator did not blink

What model and version is your router and what is the name of the indicator not blinking.

If you are referring to the link light, some routers use that as only a connection to the modem light and once the connection is established it stays on solid, and some routers also use it as a traffic light that blinks when there is traffic moving across the router to the modem. Without the make and model it is impossible to know which case wold be correct.

Are the lights on the router stay on or blinking ?

The power light should stay solid as long as the router is plugged in. The WAN light and LAN lights are solid when you are connected, and the connection is idle. The lights blink when traffic is present. The lights are off when there is no connection.

My status light just blips and i am unable to browse the internet

With some older Cable modems there may be speed negotiation problems, you will see the WAN LED on the router flashing really fast as soon as you connect the Cable Modem to it.

To fix the problem you need to turn both the modem and the router off (unplug the power cable). Then turn the modem on first. After that turn the router on. After that the two devices will autonegotiate the link correctly.

Note: If you see WAN light flashing rapidly and one of the LAN lights flashing fast as well, such behaviour is due to network traffic going in/out the router. Exessive traffic may be related to virus or trojan infection on one of the computers on your LAN.

You might try lowering the MTU value on your router. The MTU can be changed to accommodate fragmentation of packets; specially encoded packets with secured data can be too large for the current MTU and cause too much fragmentation.

Step 1 Open your browser, enter the IP address of your router ( and click OK.

Step 2 Enter your username (admin) and leave the password field blank, which is the default password. Click OK to enter the web configuration page for the device.

Step 3 Click on the Home tab and click on WAN on the left side.

Step 4 The default MTU rate is 1500, to change this enter the number in the MTU field and click the Apply button to save your settings. (Start off with 1452)

Step 5 Test your ability to connect to those specific sites you're having trouble with. If changing the MTU rate to 1452 does not resolve the problem, start lowering it in increments of ten until the problem is resolved (you may need to go as fairly low depending on your DSL connection).

Routers modem light keeps flashing and booting me off line but when i hard wire computer to modem as i am now it works fine. changed cables and reset computer and modem

Flashing lights on a router are routine - they indicate connectivity and traffic.

Seems to me the simple answer here is stay connected by wire. Wire runs much faster than wireless. Wireless is 10 <> while wire is usually either 100 or 1000. If you have to have wireless, do a hard reset on your router and also reload the drivers. Check with the manufacturer for any soft or firmware grades they may offer. If you find a firmware upgrade - make sure you understand the instructions before you start. If you fail in this department, you will have to replace your router. Had you given a little more information on this, I could have done better with links and such.

We have just tried to set up a belkin N wireless router and the modem red light stays flashing. Therefore , we have not been able to connect with the wireless

If you follow these steps it should clear up your issue.

  1. Unplug power from your modem, router and computer (turn off computer). Check to make sure your modem does not have a back up battery in it.
  2. Plug the coax (cable) or phone line (dsl) into your modem
  3. Plug an ethernet cable from your modem to the router. Make sure it is plugged into the "internet" port.
  4. Turn the modem on and wait 40 seconds for the lights to come on and the system to boot up fully.
  5. When it is up, plug the power into the router. Wait another 40 seconds to a minute for all the lights to come on and be green.
If this does not help please let me know and we can move further with your support. Routers can sometimes be very sensitive.

Good Luck,

I have a linksys wrt54g router. Lost power the other day and now router does not work with cable modem. All the settings are the same on the router, power, wlan, and internet lights are on. Tried to reset...

Check to make sure that your route has DHCP turned on.  Save your settings and turn everything off.  Power on you modem and wait at least one minute, if your modem has a link light, it should come on and stay solid once it connect with your ISP.  Then turn on your router and wait another minute for it to sync with your cable modem.  Finally, turn on your computer.  Remember that everytime that you plug something new into your cable modem, you have to reset your power.
