When I try to tap on a voicemail, the iPhone screen goes immediately black. I can get it to come back by pressing the reset/power off button at the top right on the phone. It's NOT a problem with the infrared sensor - the screen doesn't come back on even after two minutes if I leave it completely alone and am nowhere near it unless I hit reset/power-off button on top right of iPhone.
a 6ya Technician can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.

hi Tee. To find your deleted voicemails, open the Phone app, tap Voicemail, and scroll down to the bottom of the page until you see the words "Deleted Messages". If you do not see the Deleted Messages panel, then there are no messages to recover.
Tap the "Emergency Call" button, then enter three pound signs, hit the green Call button and immediately press the Lock button. That simple procedure gives a snoop full access to the Phone app on the iPhone, which contains the address book, voicemail and call history.
Press 1 to use existing number, or enter the wireless number starting with area code.
Tap the 3 key to "get help with voicemail." (5 for enterprise customers)
Tap the 3 key to reset your VM password.
Enter the Billing Zip code for the account.
A temporary password will be sent via SMS
Access voicemail with this temporary password.
After performing the above steps, my voicemail was accessible once
again, and I didn't appear to have lost any prior voice mail messages.
AT&T's support page has several other options available as well,
but I found the above to be the quickest and easiest to execute directly
from my iPhone.
