Re: Correction doesn't work
Make sure that you are using a fresh correction tape, not one that has been sitting in a box for years. Also make sure that the correction tape is installed correctly and that the "sticky" side is facing the printed paper.

The key to the right of the spacebar with the "X" printed on it is the correction button. You just place the carrier on the character to the right of the wrong one and hit the corr. button. The carrier should automatically back up and and remove the incorrect character and if you hold the key down it will continue to back up and remove characters. then you just type in the right one(s). Of course you have to have good "correctable" ribbon and correction tape cartridges installed. If the tapes are old you may have to advance them by typing and correcting or by manually advancing them before they will work. If the correction doesn't remove all the ink from the paper you may have a bad ribbon and/or correction tape.
When the T/W is turned on does the ribbon go up and down or does it just stay in one place? Try it without the correction tape attached if it works then the correction tape is installed wrong. If it doesn't check the plug on the ribbon motor and give it a shot of WD40 on the upper and lower bearings (it is located under the ribbon deck at thr R. front.
Check to be sure the ribbon dosen't have a fold in it and is fully seated in place, be sure the platen is fully seated in the side frames, check the correction tape for proper imstallation it can rob the print if to high.
Hi Many brother type writers have two cam assemblies under ribbon holder. One operates the print hammer and the other operates the correction ribbon lift. sometimes they gets stuck or lock themselves up. turning on and off a few times will take care of it, but sometimes it needs to be worked on by a tech. If you look when you type a character, most likely the print hammer is not firing or it is striking the correction ribbon instead of the black ribbon. Let us know if you want to know something more else please accept the suggestion. Thanks for contacting Fixya.com
alot of the brother t/w's have 2 cam assemblies under ribbon holder. 1 operates the print hammer and 1 operates the correction ribbon lift. sometimes these will hang or lockup. sometimes turning on and off a few times will take care of it, but sometimes it needs to be worked on by a t/w tech. if you look when you type a character, most likely the print hammer is not firing or it is striking the correction ribbon instead of the black ribbon.
possibilities, one the correction tape is twisted and the wrong side is
.facing the paper. The shinny side should be facing you, the dull side
facing the paper. Second possibility you must make sure the ribbon is
compatible with the correction tape. There are 2 types of ribbons. A
correctable one (orange or yellow knob) and a multi strike (blue or
purple knob on ribbon cartridge). The lift off correction tape (orange
or yellow spools) only works with the correctable ribbon and the cover
up correction tape (blue) works with the multistrike ribbon.
Check the way the correct tape is installed. I have seen people twist them around the guide backwards and the correction material is facing away from the paper. Also can you see the correction tape lifting up?
