Just bought and installed my first CD-RW (Digital Research model DRCDRW481648). Also, installed the Nero Software which came with it (Nero Burning and InCD among others). When I start Nero Burning, the message "Scanning SCSI/IDE-Bus, Please Wait" appears, and that's as far as I get. The computer shows no signs of the hard drive being accessed or anything else happening. The computer locks up and I must reboot. I've tried # but have trouble getting to their FAQ's or technical support. I'm in way over my head and not even sure if I should have installed the InCD software. It seems the only thing it's used for is to format CD-RW's and that took me about 40 minutes each using a 333 machine. My main use of this CD-RW is for making back-ups of my hard drive. Any help would be appreciated.
-   I tried to install nero update 9.0.9.d, and about all i got was errors. I used the nero 9 cleaner, but there were several functions that were not installed. I have tried several ways to install nero 9. I think the trial download worked, but when I tried the "updates", there were problems. I have just about given up. -   jhenry1933
Partial solution: do not simply uninstal by way of control panel. Go to Nero.com>support>downloads, find, download, and run the appropriate cleaning utility.

Graham,
My operating system is Windows 98. Also, I have no SCSI devices.
which unzipped to two files: the dll file you mentioned which was to be installed in the Nero folder, and also NEROPIX.VXD which was to be installed in the Windows\System\IOSUBSYS folder. I did so and rebooted with no change.
Then I opened in Safe Mode and the "Scanning SCSI/IDE.." message appeared for a couple of seconds and took me right to the wizard. I could drag/drop files, and the log would show burn started time and completion time. Unfortunately, the CD-RW never spun up, so it never really burned.
The Nero website also lists a download to "...check if the WinASPI driver layer is installed correctly". I think I'll try that next.

Do you have any anti-virus program running in the background? If so, disable that and try Nero.
At any rate, uninstall Nero and delete Ahead directory.
Install aspi 4.60 using ForceASPI from a link here: #
Reboot.
Disable any background tasks such as anti-virus program. Reinstall Nero.

Which operating system is this?
Clearly your writer is installed correctly, and you would expect the version of Nero *supplied with it* would work with the drive, no matter where Digital Research sourced the drive. However, there are some anomalies concerning the way Nero uses ASPI with relation to the different Windows operating systems.
On Windows 2000/XP systems, Nero will install a file called wnaspi32.dll in the Nero folder, which is its ASPI file and that file must be present for Nero to work correctly on those systems.
On Windows 9x systems, I believe that it looks to see if an external ASPI layer is installed (as there is no resident ASPI in those systems) - ASPI being the system whereby the software communicates with the writer. Depending on what is found I understand that this wnaspi32.dll file may not be installed. If an installed ASPI layer is corrupt then the circumstances could arise where an installation sees no ASPI whatsoever.
The first thing to do is to check for the presence of that dll file and put it in place if missing. You can copy the file from the installation disc.
Windows 9x also permits the use of VXD files to extend the operating system. These can cause the system to fail if too many such files use the operating system call backs. You could find that you have a working aspi and the system will fail because of the VXD file. You can establish if this is the problem by renaming the nerocd95.vxd file to nerocd95.old, then reboot. If you can now start Nero, albeit with an error message, then that is the cause of your problems. If that is the case I have a couple of different versions that you can try. This *only* applies to the Windows 9x OS.

John,
I followed your directions and the CD-RW apparently is being recognized by my computer. I can access files from it with no problem.
Regarding seeing the CD-RW in "My Computer" it is listed as Optorite. In my User's Guide Digital Research is not mentioned at all and under the Warranty Information, I/OMagic is listed for repairs, etc. This CD-RW has many aliases.
After reinstalling the Nero software it still hadn't corrected the problem.
Later, I started Windows in "Safe Mode". Then when I tried to open Nero, I got the following message, "The WIN-ASPI file '?.?' can't be found, therefore you can currently select only image recorders. This missing file is a part of the Windows 95/98/ME files. Please fix this problem and then restart Nero. [Error12:Init failed!]"
I do appreciate your trying to help me.
