Just gave this orphan a home via a co-worker.
Make: JVC
Model: 4VR-5456X
A few short questions since I'm not all familiar with Vintage JVC:
Previous owner says it worked when last plugged in (where have I
heard THAT before??).
1) If D.O.A, worth repair?
2) Track Record (ie: known problems)?
3) Boat Anchor, Museum Piece, or Rocker?
Thanxs!

As I told people endlessly when I was selling home audio, the center channel only serves one purpose: to lock the dialog to the center of the picture if you're sitting off to one side. Although - it can improve intelligibility if the dialog is mixed low. RM(QS)does a fine job of decoding Dolby Pro Logic.
Happy trails,

So Very True! Using those 70's era decoders simply assume that center channel is Mono and thus, sends it to the Front two channels.
To me, those Surround movies today "sound" a whole heckuva lot better using Vintage Quad versus "Today Home Theatre" units.
Peanut Gallery: No Way!
Dan: Oh? 13% THD on a Sony 200 watt 5 piece unit? Go blow yer nose! For me, gimmie Vintage with a LOW THD - say about 0.01% but no more than 1.5% - with RAW POWER!! Woo-Hoo!
Heck-fire, I love it when things blow up and the floor vibrates - and THAT'S my Realistic at 25 watts x4 at 1.3% THD (going from memory).
JVC:
My curiosity is more along the lines of the decoder section on the JVC is still operable ASSUMING it's not DOA.
A while back, I came across a Quad amp (Pioneer) that the decoding was Kapuit. Signal goes in, but only 2 channel sound out of all 4 channels (weak signal out of the rear channels when in any 4 channel mode). Sent the same signal into my Realistic and BINGO - Decoding!
Paying a $20 bench charge confirmed what I suspected about that unit. Ended up selling it to re-coup my loss.

Sneak preview the all-new Yahoo.com. It's not radically different. Just radically better.

Cool!
If anyone knew, it would be you Larry!
--- now I can *some-what* retire my Realistic Quad from my video entertainment center. Kinda looking forward to see if the beast has life -- and most of all -- if the decoders on it can do it's job on those 5.1 Surround Sound movies.
Ya, I know it's 4 channel, but who needs that center channel when it's Mono anyway?

Found it in the "Stereo Buying Guide" from 1976. It was the best of JVC's 4-channel line that year, and retailed for $800. 43 watts per channel times four, which is a pretty solid figure for the times! Built-in CD-4 demodulator (JVC invented CD-4), SQ and RM decoders. Not aware of any particular problems; JVC was not a big name in the '70s, but their stuff was/is on the upper end of decent. Worth it for the CD-4 demodulator if you want to go that route on vinyl. Fairly ordinary for SQ and RM, since all they cared about was their own system.
Happy trails,
