Question about Whirlpool 18.2 cu. ft. Top Freezer Refrigerator ET18PKXG

1 Answer

Whirlpool ET18NK fridge does not get cold but freezer is ok. The freezer portion is around 15 degrees, but the fridge wont get colder that about 53 degrees. The house was empty for about 6 months, and we plugged in the fridge before the heat was on in the house. Dont know the exact temp when we plugged it in, but it wasnt much above freezing, if at all.

Turns out, the fan was frozen, and never had a chance to thaw.

I emptied the fridge and freezer and allowed them to defrost for about 5 hours. Then started taking screws out of the freezer pan and back wall of the freezer to take them apart to clean it. After taking the vent tubes out and removing the back wall, I had access to the fan. So I plugged the fridge back in and saw the fan was not working. I gave the fan fan a little "flick" with my finger, and away it went. Started working and hasnt stopped working yet.

I am going to buy a new fan to keep on hand in case it happens again.

If the fan is frozen this would be cause because something in the defrost system is bad. Or you could have a open motor. Make sure the door gasket is sealing.

Top of the refrigerator is not cooling and the freezer portion is to cold

Main cooling happens in the freezer.

Since top (fridge part) not getting cooling the sensor in that part is continuously asking for cold. So the freezer get colder and colder.

Fridge part not cooling can be due to one of the many reasons.

Evaporator fan, Defrosting problem, Damper motor issues etc etc.

Freezer works great, but fridg. will not get below 50

The fridge gets its cold air from the freezer through a vent(damper) between the freezer and fridge. The fan in the freezer blows air through it. There is a flap you adjust with the fridge temp. control. Make sure it's opening and closing when you adjust the fridge temp.

Refrigerator portion not getting real cold, freezer is ok.

I you have set the adjustment (if there is one and should be) on the fridge side to the colder setting, there may be an electrical issue with the control.

If there is not much in the fridge and you set it too cold, items will freeze.
Use a thermometer and make sure you have some items in there, test the temp.

You can just use a bunch of the ice pouches from a cooler to fill it up for this test, then see what it says the temp is, also check the manual you have or can get from the internet. It should tell you optimal temp.

More info on fridge is helpful, i.e. model number, mfgr date and so on.

Sounds like a evaporator fan or defrost problem. Your freezer should be colder then that, 5 degrees or below. Anyway, any cold air the fresh food compartment gets is blown over from the freezer, verify you can feel the air flow or visually see or hear the fan in the freezer compartment. If that checks ok more then likely your defrost system has a defect. This consists of a defrost timer or adaptive defrost board, a defrost terminator which is just a bi-metal thermostat set typically at 30 degrees or so and a heater element, either a calrod or 1 or 2 glass encased elements. When this system fails you end up with a block of ice on the coils through which air cannot circulate.
