Question about HP (D4384-63002) (d438463002) Internal 32x CD-ROM Drive

1 Answer

When I turned on the computer this morning the CD/DVD holder(tray??) kept coming out and back in every minute. I restarted the computer and the same thing happens. How can I stop this?

I now know what the button and door should be like for future reference.

It was not a virus problem.

I had restarted the computer several times but this did not help.

Then I turned the computer off overnight and the next morning the CD Rom was OK and has been so far.

    Thanks for you help

  1. Run anti virus software. May have a bug.
  2. No Virus you may have a hardware issue check to make sure nothing is lodged to stop tray from going all the way in.
  3. Depress cd eject button shold fell lite click when youpress it, move your finger around the button to make sure it is free. It should spring back when you let it up. If no click or button does not come up you have a switch problem.
  4. Make sure front pannel on cdrom is seated evenly & flush if not it will hinder or hold down eject button.
  5. If still acting up you may need to replace drive.

ac7h,

Tell me what driver you downloaded, AND how you installed it?

http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/19/Product/inspiron-600m

Removable Storage

The method is to;

1) Click on the blue Download File to the right.

2) On the next page under the bold subheading - Choose Download Method, make sure there is a green dot in the small circle, to the left of -> Single-file download

If not; click in the small empty circle to the left of Single-file download
Now click on Continue in the blue oval.

A small window will come up.
Make SURE there is a Green dot in the small circle, to the left of -
Save File.
If not; left-click in the small empty circle to the left of - Save File
Go below in the window, and click on OK.

A small download window will come up.
Allow the file to fully download, then DOUBLE-click right on the file name.

To the far left in the next window click right on - Extract all files
At the bottom of the next 3 small windows, click on -
Next, Next, and Finish.

If you are not asked to restart your computer do so.
(Start > Turn Off Computer > Restart)

When Windows fully loads again, you should get a pop-up out of the system tray, "Found new hardware device"
And perhaps another one, "Found xxxxx CD/DVD drive"

No?
Wait a few minutes, let Windows run.
Turn the computer off normally.
WAIT 1 minute, turn the computer back on.

Still no?
I suggest then that the optical drive is bad. (CD/DVD drive)

One screw removed from the bottom, (ALL power removed), then slide the CD/DVD drive out to replace,

Optical drives are a mechanical device, and rated in hours of usage.
Eventually they wear out, and go to the great optical drive graveyard in the sky. (What?)

LG GH22NS70 Super multi DVD Rewriter just used

Power cable attached, interface cable attached, (Dta cable), and the small audio cable attached, plus computer on, and Windows loaded.

Windows XP:
1) Click on Start

2) Right-click on My Computer

3) Left-click on Properties at the bottom of the list

4) Left-click on the Hardware tab

5) Left-click on Device Manager

6) When Device Manager loads, left-click on the + sign to the left of - DVD/CD-ROM drives

7) Right-click on the name of the optical drive.

8) Left-click on Uninstall

A Microsoft 'squawk box' will come up,
"Warning you are about to uninstall this device"
It's okay. Click on OK.

Close all windows, go back to your desktop screen.
Turn the computer off normally. (Start > Turn Off Computer > Turn Off)

Wait 1 minute. Turn the computer back on.
You should get a pop-up out of the system tray, "Found new hardware", and perhaps another one will follow, "Found XXXX DVD drive"

No? Doesn't work?
Try using another 4-pin standard Peripheral power cable.

http://www.playtool.com/pages/psuconnectors/connectors.html#peripheral

(The IDE harddrive shown, is just an example of a device that uses a 4-pin standard Peripheral power cable. Mistakenly referred to as a 'Molex' power cable)

Make sure the interface cable (Data cable) is plugged in tightly.

My cd will not come out of my Dell Vostro 2510 laptop. The cd will play, but when I press the eject button it will not come out.

Welcome to Fixya.

Here are the methods on how to get that cd out of the tray :

Method1
  • Turn off the computer
  • Disconnect all cables except the power cable
  • Turn the computer back on and start tapping on the 'DEL' key until you reach a different, colorless screen.
  • Try to eject the CD/DVD drive.
Method2
  • Obtain a paper clip
  • Turn off the computer
  • Check the DVD/CD drive and look for a very small 'Pinhole'
  • Gently use one end of the paper clip and 'push' on that hole
  • CD tray should eject
If these methods fail, then I would recommend for you to contact DELL support for warranty replacement options :

Dvd drive wont open , can hear motor working but drive wont come out. we believe the cd holder isnt shifting up/down to allow the drive to activate & open

Turn the computer off,Remove power cable.Use a peper clip insert it through a hole infront of the dvd drive this will eject the door.Make sure once this is opened the tray is aligned properly, slide it in and out.Push it in all the way then power up the computer. This may work for a while, before it goes again,so you might have to replace it.

Hi I'm Rain ,
Ok follow these instructions to reboot your CD Rom drive.

  1. click start then My Computer .
  2. In My Computer right click the DVD/CD rom drive icon .
  3. In the list , Click eject to see if the drive is being reconized .
  4. If nothing happens repeat steps 1-2
Now when you get to sep 3 you will click properties .

5. In properties click Hardware .

6. In Hardware click the DVD/CD device to highlight it .

7. Click properties .

Now look to the bottom of that window to see device status .
If it says , this device is working properly .Properties .
Next click Driver . In driver you will see a list of option tabs that allows you to , Roll Back driver Update driver and Disable driver .
The other option is Driver Details.

Click Roll Back driver to restore the driver back to the state before you added the latest program . Click ok and follow the screen instructions.
If this fails , you can follow these steps to get back to Driver and chose
Disable Driver . Click ok if another window pops up.
Now what you are doing is rebooting the DVD/CD rom drive.
This will restart all the drivers that are associated with the DVD/CD rom
device .
Now follow all the steps again to get back to Driver .
Now in Driver you will need to click Enable to restart the DVD/CD rom

DVD tray won't open.

Opening a CD or DVD drive to retrieve a disc
  • Use Windows to open the drive door:
    1. Double-click the My Computer icon on the desktop (or click Start and My Computer in Microsoft Windows XP).
    2. Right-click the CD, CD-RW, or DVD drive , and then click Eject .
  • Restart the computer and press the EJECT button on the front of the drive when the first screen appears (before Windows launches). If the drive door opens this way but does not open in Windows, another software program is taking control of the CD drive. Try shutting down or configuring any programs that write discs or monitor the CD drive.
  • If the door still will not open, do the following:
    1. Close all programs and shut down the computer.
    2. Unplug the PC from the power outlet and remove the battery.
    3. Locate the manual release hole in the front faceplate of the optical drive tray. This is a small hole under the door that is a little bigger than the diameter of a paper clip. The location of the manual eject hole will vary.
    4. Insert a straightened paperclip into the manual release hole until resistance is felt.
    5. Once the resistance is felt, keep pushing the paper clip until the drawer comes out about a quarter of an inch.
    6. Remove the paper clip and gently pull out the drawer until the disc is accessible.
    7. Remove the CD and turn on the computer.

Error message "tray set up not correct"

I had the same problem. It's easy to fix.

Simply pull your printer away from the wall about 8". The tray needs to stick out from the back of your printer when it loads. If it hits the wall, it will not work properly and eject. Just try moving your printer forward enough so the tray can stick out from the back and you'll be fine.

CD-RW Problems

First, try this:- Go to my computer>properties>hardware>device manager and look down the list for your cd/dvd drives and click the '+' sign then highlight your dvd drive and right click to delete. Restart the pc and windows will find the drive again automatically and install the drivers. If that doesn't work, take off the side of the pc and and look to the back of your burner. You will see an ide cable connected to the back, either try a new cable or try the cable that is connected to the hard disk drive, as there will be another connector available. If you do use the burner on the same cable as your HDD then you will have to set the jumper on the back of the burner to slave. It could be a bad cable or faulty ide motherboard connection.
