If you're running Vista that's normal.

Here’s a quick procedure that helps speed windows vista startup:

  • Click the Windows Start button
  • Right click Computer
  • Click Properties
  • Click Advanced System settings
  • In the Advanced Tab, Start and Recovery, click Settings
  • In the Time to display operating systems list setting, set a 5 second value instead of 30.
  • Click Apply
Now, Reboot your PC. You’ll notice a boost in the performance of the startup process.

Fan on Dell M5030 Starts on startup and then shuts down but computer continues to boot

Lots of fans are variable speed. Meaning they spin faster when the computer is hot and slow down when not. It's most likely spinning down. If the fan was bad the computer will either shutdown or generate an error during BIOS and halt the boot process.

Slow start up and shut down

Hello,

You didn't mention what version of Windows (Is it Windows, or is it Linux / other?) that you are using. For laptops in particular, windows sometimes gets confused as to which power saving state that the laptop should be in.

Next time that windows is running, you should see an icon of either a battery, or of a power plug in the area next to the clock (lower right corner). If you LEFT click on this, there will be a list of various power schemes that are available. MAX BATTERY will reduce the processor speed the most, while ALWAYS ON turns off power saving altogether, and allows the laptop to run at full speed.

If your fan always seems to be on, or seems to be cycling on and off rapidly even though you are doing little with the computer, then you might need to have the fan and heatsink cleaned out (consult a computer shop). When the processor starts to run hot, the motherboard will begin to slow it down regardless of the power scheme.

You might also be looking at a program that is loading during startup (did you just happen to install Open Office by chance?) that also takes a while to unload while shutting down. Consider what you have recently installed, and check your startup menu (click start >> programs >> startup ) to see what is being loaded there.

goto start up and turn off anything that you do not need to run at start up....becareful that you do not turn off key components to your system...just look for software you have downloaded...this will help speed up your start up and shutdown....

Computer Shut Down Problem

Is the computer taking forever to shutdown in the blue screen or is it something else. Perhaps try closing the applications running with the system to help the process speed up and actually work without the usage of the power button.

Can connect to local but not Internet?
This is most likely due to a driver issue other than a settings issue. First off, if you are running your computer in selective startup, change it back to normal startup and reboot. If this clears the problem then great, you can go back to selective startup but be careful as to what services you shut down.
The easiest way to check if this is a driver issue is to update the driver for the device. This can be done at the Device Manager found in the control panel, (In XP, the device manager is in the “system” icon and under the hardware tab). Scroll down to the network adapters and click on the + sign. Double click on the adapter and choose to update driver, let it search the internet (windows update) if it wants to, if it finds an updated driver, allow it to install. If it does not find an updated driver, then maybe the driver you have is a recent one but it may be corrupt. If that is the case, then it would be better to right click on the adapter and choose uninstall, this will force windows to reinstall the device the next time it reboots, and again it will ask to search online for a fresh driver, choose yes and let it run. Once the device installs, try to connect to the internet.

Think pad T30 - very slow to shut down

Your computer needs a clean.
Be sure that your computer is not virus or spyware infected.

Check if the fan is working, another cause could be related to a hardware issue.
