I am using Windows XP Pro. Also, when it is in the continuous reboot it flashes that it is" loading pdr 2 done" then it reboots again. But it just is in continuous reboot. I pressed F12 button and ran a complete systems check and nothing came up. I have so many pictures and work files that are not on any kind of back up and I don't want to lose them. Is there anything I can do to fix this without losing my photos and files?

I don't understand why one person says "all is lost" and that I need to completely restore my system, and another person tells me how to save everything and get back to normal functions? Please someone tell me which tech answer to trust?

How do you know for sure that it is a virus? Is there a way for me to check and see what is wrong?

    Please advise on the following:

What version of Windows are you running?

What error do you get before it restarts if any?

Hi there, the only way to defeat the virus that has attacked your pc is to totally restore your operating system. you will not be able to use the system restore because of the virus that is destroying your hard drive. i recommend a restoration disk or a new copy of the operation system disk. windows/vista. just insert the windows disk and close the slot. shut down for 5 min then, restart. the restoration will began.

NO, all is lost. its a virus and you will need to restore the entire OS.

I hate to the say this but, the repair option will not work. the virus will fight back. the only option is total Restoration and that means you will have to re format this drive. there is no other way. the virus has total control at this moment.

if you cant enter safe mode than its a virus. if your cpu is restarting over and over, its a virus.

the only way to get rid of a virus is to clean the partitions. this means total restoration.

I believe you can fix this problem without having to lose your files and also without having to reinstall your operating system.

In order to fix this issue you will need your windows XP cd.

Place the Windows XP cd into the optical drive and restart your machine. You need to boot from your Windows XP CD and at the prompt, press "R" for repair to get inot the Windows Console.

At that prompt, select 1 for your windows instalatin directory.

type "FIXMBR" at the prompt and restart your machine.

If this does not work, repeat the above process and instead of typing "FIXMBR", type "CHKDSK /R" and let it run to fix problems. It may take some time but once done, restart your machine and you should be back in action. Good luck...

Please do not be confused or frustrated. Different techies have different experiences with handling problems. Please give my solution a chance first as it is the best way to get back to normal functions. This has worked for me before.

If this solution does not work, i appologise but atleast no harm done. You can try the other steps.

Unfortunately it's not easy as you would need special toold CD to boot up and check. It would be complicated.

AS YOU ON THE SYSTEM AND EVEN BEFORE WINDOWS STARTS KEEP PRESSING THE F8 KEY CONTINUEOUSLY. A MENU WILL APPEAR. SELECT SAFE MODE AND ENTER. WINDOWS WILL LOAD IN SAFE MODE. THIS WILL SOLVE SOME OF YOUR PROBLEMS. NOW RESTART THE SYSTEM IN NORMAL MODE.

IF THIS DOES NOT WORK SELECT "LOAD WINDOWS WITH LAST KNOWN GOOD CONFIGURATION " AND THEN RESTART. THIS WILL SURELY SORT OUT YOUR PROBLEM.

My Dell Inspiron 6000 (which I think I bought in

Have you tried this:
1. After removing the battery
2. Press and hold the power button for at least 10 sec.
3. Put back the battery
4. Turn it on

if this doesnt work, there could be a problem with your operating system. Try accessing safe mode if you can login .TAP F8 continously on the dell logo screen, and it will open advance boot options. (Just select safe mode) If safe mode boots properly try running system restore to restore it back to the previous date where your computer is still booting to windows. Hope this helps

When i start up my dell inspirion 6000 laptop the logo comes up and then screen goes black

When you see the Dell logo, it means the system is booting and you see the splash screen that is generated on the motherboard.
Apparently this is where it is stopping.
Here's what I would do: First when you boot the computer, press F12 to get the boot options. Choose the diagnostics and run the system diagnostics.
You can also try to press F8 to get the computer into safe mode, but I'm thinking if you see nothing other than the splash screen, that may not work. If you are presented with Windows boot options, choose safe mode and do a system restore.
The last thing you can do if you have the Dell system recovery disk is try to do a repair from that CD if it allows you to do so.

Inspirion 1000 with XP won't come out of dormant phase. What is wrong ?

Hi dj,

Reboot, at reboot look for the F button option to "enter setup", press F? button. Navigate to boot options, choose safe mode, save changes exit. When os comes up and is stable click start>all programs>accessories>system tools>system restore. Choose date before issue arises and click next/ok/continue. When restore is complete reboot, enter DOS enviroment(F button option "enter set up"), choose normal boot, save changes and exit.
