Did you replace the fan?

Is it XP:
If so do a repair on XP:

XP repair
When you boot with the Win XP install CD-ROM, it loads a minimal operating system, similar to DOS, but compatible with Win XP. At the first screen you select install Win XP (not Recovery Console) and at the next screen it will find that you already have Win XP and offer to attempt a repair. This repair should not touch your Applications or data; it just reinstalls the Windows files. This is great because when it works you don't need to reinstall all your software.
If I could be of further assistance, let me know. If this helps or solves the issue, please rate it.
Thanks, Joe

If Windows (XP or 2000) won't boot but gives a text message "NTLDR missing" - well,
NTLDR is one of 3 start-up files on C: which are necessary for loading the O/S
so you would need to get a copy from another (XP or 2000) computer (they are generic).
The file NTLDR is a hidden file, so you would need to un-hide (remove its Attribute "h")
on both the other computer (in order to make a copy of it) and then on your own.

First of all you need to keep your work space clean at all times so that dust and debris do not get into your unit.

Also you need to maintain airflow a routine maintenance of your machine will keep the unit in order.

If you computer is overheating first thing you do is open the case and clean out the dust.

Also you need to replace the Thermal compound under you heat sync where you cpu is.
First you want to do is take off the cpu fan.
  1. Then you want to wipe the access thermal compound off.
  2. Then you apply the thermal compound by adding one dime size drop in the middle of the cpu (do not spread with fingers)
  3. Then you want to put back on your fan and heat sync.
This will keep your system at normal operating temperatures I would suggest you do this once ever 3 months at the most.

If you are able to see the "NTLDR is missing" error on your screen, your motherboard works.
If your laptop was working before and suddenly shows this error, it could be that the file system is damaged.

You could check this help page with plenty of information how to fix NTLDR problems:

Laptop boots to the acer screen and will show windows screen and restarts this just keeps happening. Tried booting in safe mode and just does the same thing. i have tried booting from cd, changed boot...

sounds to be like a damaged operation system or something wrong with the ram modules..Check them first and if you have more than one ..try to bot up one at the time and see which one makes trouble...It may bet he case one is just slightly out of place or so ..or if you upgraded recently may not be fully compatible on the frequency ..
so ..check the ram memory and try to boot again ..If it seam not to be from the ram attention and see if the fan is blowing ..cause if the fan is not working it may stop it cause of the overheating ..
If you have an windows boot-able disk try to reinstall the operation system and see how it it starts well and loads the files without stopping it means it is from the operation system and reinstalling will fix the issue ..(it may be a missing file for boot sequence ) ..if it stops during teh installing is a ram memory issue or anyway a physical one ..
(even the hard disk can cause such a behavior if it has bad sectors on it and can not hold the files needed for boot or some important files got stuck in such a bad sector on it ..It may work if you try to format it and reinstall until it gets the files..

My D400 overheats and screen freezes when hooked

The biggest issue docking is airflow. With the system docked, airflow is restricted.

Might look at ways of improving airflow.

My HP Pavillion DV100 notebook shuts down whenever it feels like. What could be causing this.It is 3 years old now so off warranty. It will work just fine for a little while and then voila! shut down.

Sounds like classic overheating, check your power supply fan, or the fan of your heat sync that seats over your CPU as well as the heat resistant insulation thermal lubricant that's there to keep it cool.

When fans starts to go the bears or motor starts to stick and will intermittently stop. When when it goes altogether it ceases to turn and can cause serious overheating damage to your circuitry.

MY fan only spins at the startup screen

If you are running with no fan, you will burn out the processor, stop and send that puppy in for service, please do no attempt to fix it at this point, you will be lucky if it has not burned out . I do this all day, and I take big risks but no cpu cooling is doa, leave it and send it back to the manufacturer, if it's off service or warantee, take it and get an estimate, then if you are going to toss it if it's not on warantee and it's too expensive to fix, then you can mess with fixing it
