I just want to know if I can replace my Toshiba P305 S8906 Intel Core 2 Dou Processor T6400 Centrino 2.0 for a better and faster processor

Should be able to unless it's onboard. If not then yes. Just ensure that the motherboard will support the new CPU that you wish to install.

You are looking for 'processing power', but also power saving features.
Power saving as in how much power the processor will use.
Mobile processor = Laptop/Netbook processor.
The less power it uses, the better for a Laptop/Netbook.

The battery will last longer.

Therefore it really is up to you.
Balance of processor 'power', and saving battery power ]

Core i7 - 6x0M

NOT an Intel Core i processor that needs THREE ram memory modules, ('Stick'), in order to operate.

You actually need to know the old technology, and compare to the newer Intel Core i technology, to fully understand.

BIOS upgrade? I'll pass. Too easy to scre-w up, and also miscommunicate proper procedure.

Stopping for a second;
The Core i technology will 'slap a Pentium around'
It's like comparing the 'grocery getter car' to a fuel dragster.

Core i3 and Core i5 technology has less 'processor power', than a comparable Core i7, but the Core i3, and Core i5 were also designed to use less power. Therefore (Supposedly) more battery life.

The Intel Pentium P6100 is a dual core processor. Two processor cores.

But the Core i7 is essentially a quad core processor.
Four processor cores.
This is because it uses the old HT technology.

Hypertransport Technology.
Two REAL processor cores, and if it is needed Two VIRTUAL processor cores.

Nothing to write home to Mom about, as far as using 2 processor cores.
But when the 2 virtual processor cores of the i7 kick in, that's when the Pentium P6100 would get lost in the dust.

Instead of having two processor cores operating at 2.0GigaHertz, (Pentium P6100), you have FOUR processor cores operating at 2.66GHz.

Crude example?
Two men digging a ditch. Take them out, and replace with four men.
Which scenario will get the job done faster?

HOWEVER, surfing the internet? Watching a video?
Only 1 or 2 cores are going to kick in.
Playing an intensive game, or running an intensive program?
THEN all 4 cores kick in, and kick sum boot-y.

Primer:

The motherboard chipset technology used in your laptop is a Northbridge chip, and a Southbridge chip.
(Does not apply to motherboards that support the Intel Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, and Core i9 processors)

The Northbridge chip handles the faster capabilities of a computer.
Supports the Processor, Ram Memory, and High-speed graphics.

[ High-speed graphics being AGP and PCI-Express.
Does Not apply to anything connected to the PCI bus, or Integrated Graphics.
These are slower processes of a computer, and are handled by the Southbridge chip ]

The Southbridge chip handles the slower capabilities of a computer;
Anything to do with the IDE bus, SATA bus, USB bus, Ethernet, and Audio. (Sound)

Therefore you want to look first of all at what processor socket it has, what processor was already installed, and what the Northbridge chip is.

1) Socket M processor socket.
Your replacement processor has to fit in a Socket M processor socket.

2) You know that your BIOS supports an Intel Dual Core processor, and the Yonah Core technology.
The replacement processor has to have a 533MegaHertz Front Side Bus. (533MHz FSB)
Has to operate with .0762 to 1.30 Volts (DC)

3) The Northbridge chip is an Intel 943GML.
Looking at the chart you can see this Northbridge chip will support;

A) Celeron M (Eeech!)
B) Core Solo (Bleech!)
C) Pentium Dual Core

In the list the Pentium Dual Core is the best option.
{ The Celeron M has HALF of the L2 cache that a comparable Pentium M would have.
The Core Solo is just a glorified Pentium 4. It's a Single core processor }

Has to be a mobile Pentium Dual Core that uses a 533MHz FSB.

Based on the Voltage, FSB, and processor socket used (Socket M), the Intel Pentium Dual Core
model T2130, is the best processor your motherboard will support.

What are we talking about here?
You would be going from a processor that operates at a maximum frequency rate of 1.60GigaHertz, to a processor that operates at a maximum frequency rate ('Speed') of 1.87GHz.

Not enough of a performance boost to waste your hard earned money, or time on, IMHO.

What is difference between centrino and pentium m??????


Processor wise there is no difference, Centrino is just a branding initiative by Intel and it consists of..
Pentium M Processor(now with the release of the Core Duo/Solo, they are also included)
Intel Chipset
Intel Wireless
If a laptop uses all of these parts then it is branded as a Centrino and you get a "Centrino" sticker slapped onto the laptop. If one of them is different then you get the regular Pentium M sticker.

There is no other 'real' benefits of being branded as a Centrino. It is just one of the many marketing tactics used by Intel.

Hello Sir,

It depends whether your laptop has a removable processor or not. I f you have a removable one then you can replace it with a better one. Also if you have a centrino processor than you can only change it with a centrino one, a higher end procesor will not work. according to my knowledge most newer laptops dont come with removable processors these days.

Which processor can I upgrade to?


Honestly, it is normally not worth it to upgrade the cpu on a laptop. Laptops are build to deal with a certain amount of heat and adding a faster cpu can cause the current cpu cooling fans to not get the job done anymore. You will seem instability in your system and could possibly damage it due to over heating.

With that said you would only be able to upgrade to a very slightly higher speed cpu and your money would be better spent else where. Some good ways to speed up a laptop are max out your memory or install a faster hard drive. For example if your current drive is a stock 5400rpm unit a 7200rpm drive would give you a nice boost. You could also look into a solid state option.

Both these upgrades will give your laptop a better boost without the hassle and risk of a cpu upgrade.

IBM ThinkPad R40 Intel Centrino Upgrade to Intel Core 2 Duo?


According to system specs your system is not compatible with the Core 2 Duo or Centrino Core 2 Duo. To upgrade to those chips you would need to replace the motherboard with one capable of running those chips. If you decided to do that you would almost surely need new RAM as newer boards use newer technology. By the time you did this the upgrade would not be cost effective.
