Several months ago, I remember there was some discussion as to whether or not there was a bad batch of TDK-EHG tapes in circulation. I didn't follow the discussion to its conclusion, but now I am seeing a problem which could either be defective tapes or a defective head on my VCR. The symptom is that tapes recorded on this machine have three random noise bars across the top half of the picture. The problem can be fixed temporarily by cleaning the heads. I know that having video heads which clog easily is a possible symptom of excessive head wear, but this also could be caused by defective tapes. I bought a quantity of TDK-EHG's last Summer, and these are what I have been using when this problem occurs. I would appreciate hearing from anyone who has information on this. Thanks!
I got some TDKEHG's at PriceCostco last summer and encountered a problem with snow gradually filling the screen until the picture was barely visible. Cleaning the heads eliminated the problem, and it did not reappear when playing the rest of the tape. This only happened to me on one tape out of that pack. I've since switched to Maxell HGXGold (since PriceCostco did) and haven't had any problems.
