How To Repair Your Operating System

A Repair Install will replace the system files with the files on the XP CD used for the Repair Install. It will leave your applications and settings intact, but Windows updates will need to be reapplied. Here is how to run an OS Repair using the Operating System CD in XP, Vista, or 7:

Windows XP

1. Boot the computer using the XP CD. You may need to change the boot order in the system BIOS so the CD boots before the hard drive. Check your system documentation for steps to access the BIOS and change the boot order.
2. When you see the "Welcome To Setup" screen, you will see the options below:

3. Press ENTER to start the Windows Setup.
4. Accept the License Agreement and Windows will search for existing Windows installations.
5. Select the XP installation you want to repair from the list and press R to start the repair. If Repair is not one of the options, END setup.
6. Setup will copy the necessary files to the hard drive and reboot. Do not press any key to boot from CD when the message appears. Setup will continue as if it were doing a clean install, but your applications and settings will remain intact.

Windows Vista

If you have a Windows Vista installation disc, you need to restart (boot) your computer using the installation disc. If you do not restart your computer from the disc, the option to repair your computer will not appear.

Here is a step by step picture guide.

If you have a Windows Vista installation disc:

1. Insert the installation disc.
2. Restart your computer.
3. Click the Start button, click the arrow next to the Lock button, and then click Restart.
4. If prompted, press any key to start Windows from the installation disc.

Windows 7

1. If a startup problem is detected, Startup Repair will start automatically and try to fix the problem.
2. If the problem is severe enough that Startup Repair doesn't start on its own and you can't access the System Recovery Options menu on your computer's hard disk, you can get to the menu and start Startup Repair by using the Windows installation disc or a system repair disc that you created earlier.

You need to have a Windows XP SP2 bootable disc. Just go to BIOS and enable the boot from CD/DVD Insert the Windows XP disc It will boot with the bootable disc and you just need to follow the on screen instructions. You will need to format the HDD and do a clean installation which will result in data loss. Please make sure that you take a backup of all your important data files before changing the operating system.

How to install XP in toshiba Satellite L45-S7423 laptop

You cannot uninstall Windows Vista, but you can reinstall your previous operating system, which then replaces Windows Vista. To reinstall your old operating system, you must have the original installation disc. Back up your programs and files, insert the installation disc into your computer, and then reinstall the old operating system. To regain the hard disk space used by Windows Vista, reformat the disk during the reinstallation process. After reinstalling your previous operating system, reinstall your programs and files.

Demo problem

If you have installed vista as a multiboot sytem, then you can do the below: Otherwise you have to do as tom19511 said:

Uninstall Windows Vista on a multiboot system
Applies to all editions of Windows Vista.

You cannot uninstall Windows Vista. However, you can change the code that starts the operating system (often called the master boot code), and then remove Windows Vista from your multiboot system and return to Windows XP or Windows 2000. You will need your Windows Vista installation disc for this procedure.

Before you begin, back up your programs, files, and settings. Removing Windows Vista is an advanced procedure that could result in losing information stored on your computer. For information about backing up data, search Help and Support for "back up."

1) Insert the Windows Vista installation disc.
2) Click the Start button getopencontent.aspx?assetid=4f6cbd09-148c-4dd8-b1f2-48f232a2fd33&documentset=en-us&renderkey=xml, click All Programs, click Accessories, right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as administrator. getopencontent.aspx?assetid=18abb370-ac1e-4b6b-b663-e028a75bf05b&documentset=en-us&renderkey=xml If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
3) Type [DVD drive letter]:\boot\bootsect.exe /nt52 ALL /force and then press ENTER.
For example, if the DVD drive letter is F, type f:\boot\ bootsect.exe /nt52 ALL /force.
4) Eject the Windows Vista installation disc.
5) Restart your computer.
Your computer will start in the previous version of Windows that you have installed.
6) Delete Windows Vista files and folders, such as the Program Files, Users, and Windows folders, manually.

Note: You can also remove Windows Vista by reformatting the partition where it is installed, but do this only if that partition is not the boot partition. Reformatting the boot partition might make your computer unable to start.
