Running Speaker wire...

By M0nica L - usenet poster

Saturday I am planning on putting two speakers into my truck. Well, what
I have is two Jensen 3-ways that are supposed to be mountable (they are
in a case, you don't put them in the holes.) I am planning to either sit
them with the speaker face facing up behind the seat or with the face
facing towards the front of the truck under the seats. Well, I was
wondering what was a good way to secure the speaker wire. I was planning
on running thm both down the passenger side of the hump along the
bottom, with tie straps every 5 or so inches, But How do I make them
stay put? From the hump, i am planning to make them go their seperate
ways after tyhey go under the seat. Also, what is a good way to secure
the speakers? All help is already appreciated

Brian,

I just recently installed a pair of Jensen Tri-axials (6x9) model # XS
6933TX in the factory holes. Even though they are not listed on the box as
a direct factory replacement, they will fit. The only thing that I noticed
is that once your door panels are reinstalled that the factory "speaker
grill" in the panel flexes inward just a bit, as the inside of the panel
will touch the mount for the mid, and high drivers.

But to make a long story short, they sound *so* much better than the factory
6x9's ( model # OEM-POS )

Those doors resonate pretty well actually...

One thing that I did find out, however, is that the factory rear speakers
were NOT 5.25 " like the book said, but 5.5" making an interesting mounting
problem to overcome... you can do neat things with strip caulk. :)

Not the prettiest, but when the truck was apart and had to be back together
the next day, you learn to become a miracle worker of sorts... hehe...

As far as mounting the speakers, I can't help there, but you might want to
rethink the wiring route. When I wired the rear speakers on my 96 that I
used to have, I ran under the dash to the kick panels. These simply snap
together and can be easily removed and installed. I followed the rocker
panels along the door, again easy removal and installation, two or three
screws to be exact. I then finished them up by running them behind the
plastic panels in the rear. You won't need any tie wraps going this route
as you can follow the wire loom on the drivers side and run the wire over
the HVAC ductwork and box on the passenger side. The panels fit tight
enough to hold them in place.

I gather your Jensen 3-ways are 6x9's? If so, depending on the year of
your truck, they would be direct replacements for your door speakers
(I have a 98, and these use 6x9 door speakers) and this would be the
best place to put your Jensen's. But, for ideal sound, always try and
aim your speakers directly at the dome light in your vehicle (which is
usually the very center/highest point in the cab) The effect you want
to achieve is to raise the sound stage to make it appear as if you are
immersed in the sound, not having it appear that the sound is below
you or behind you (I mean, when was the last time you went to a
concert and sat with your back against the stage?)

Ideally, try and hide the wiring under the carpet in the cab (hidden
is always nice lookin' :)

I'd have to recommend a better way to go (if your finances can swing
it) and replace your door speakers with 6 inch mid bass drivers and
separate 1 inch tweeters (not coaxial speakers suck as your Jensen's)
You could use crossover capacitors (bought cheap at any electronics
store, such as Radio Shack) to tweek the frequencies properly for
mid range and high's. This will give you better sound than adding in
the Jensen's and be totally hidden in the doors (if they can't see it,
they won't think of stealing it :)

When you open the door there is a plastic piece which covers the carpet
butting up against the metal. I route all my wires through there or near
it because its hidden. I can usually fish the wire through the carpet
with a coat hanger and wire.
