Cactus Bob you saved the day!!! My mom passed away and I inherited her crock pot without the instructions thus I had no idea what autoshift meant. Makes sense though. Thanks for allowing me to enjoy my mom's crockpot to the fullest now!!!!

It does just what it says . its a great feature . in auto shift mode the pot will be on high untill it reaches full boil or a pre set time has gone by .... most people start there crock pots on high and turn them to low when it gets cooking .....this does it for you ... happy crock poting ...Please if this answer helped , please rate this 3 or 4 stars . and keep me in the paid answer department . A 1 or 2 may knock me down into the unpaid ranks. Thanks Cactus Bob .

This is very helpful as I'm totally new to crock pots, and got this without a manual. Wondered how AutoShift was supposed to work. Thanks!

On the dial there is off, low, high and auto. What does the auto do? If I select auto is there a timer on it that shuts the pot down after a time? Is fo what is the time.

There is no timer -- with the dial set to auto, a thermostat opens and closes turning the heating element(s) on and off to keep the pot at a fairly constant temperature. The high setting can continually boil the contents, and can burn the food if not stirred. The low setting is for keeping contents warm.

I'd use "auto", if the pot is not going to be monitored.

What is the auto switch on a small crock pot for?

Hi,
That is so that the crock pot goes on high heat to get things heated up faster and then shifts automatically to low after it is hot...so that it does not over cook your food when left for a whole day...

On the crock pot it has low, high and auto What does auto mean?

Hi, well, Auto means that it uses an internal, weight & temperature sensor to determine the Cooking time of whatever is in it. It will then "Cook" until "It" thinks it is "Done" and turn off at the end.
I believe that they are NOT that accurate? But a possible time saver nevertheless.

No manual for my old Crock Watcher by Proctor Silex

The auto setting cooks on high for the first hour, then adjusts the setting to low for the remaining cooking time.
Auto Shift allows the slow cooker to heat up to high and then internally shift down to low, so it gives more flexibility in cooking time. Example: A certain recipe may take 4 hours on high, 5-6 hours on Auto Shift and 7-8 hours on Low.
