My Coleman Generator 5000w with a Tecumseh 10hp story. Mine engine finally did die before I pulled the carburator off.
On mine the float was defective. It was full of fuel! I repaired the hole in it. I removed the air filter and saw fuel pouring out the side so much that I had a jar to catch it. I removed the carburator and took the nut off the bowl to examine the float. Then I removed the pin holding the hinged end of the float. Carefully pulled it out with the needle valve attached. When I removed the needle valve (just slides on mine) it was free to test. I tested by shaking it near my ear and I could hear the fuel inside the float. Mine was brass or copper. I wiped mine off with a napkin and finally found the hole. I drained the fuel by polking a needle sized hole and removed the fuel. I then soldered the hole shut with using just electronic 60/40 resin solder and a small soldering iron. Mine works like a champ now.

I'm not an expert but I have a 10 or 12 year old Coleman 5K Watt generator with a 10HP Briggs & Stratton OHV engine. Model: 204412 Type: 0136e1 Code: 030102yd. It was leaking gas from the air cleaner and stalling when this happened. We were convinced it was the carb. We took it all apart and cleaned it. It still spit gas. Ended up buying a new nikiki carb and after installation ($93.00 later) it still spit gas. BTW the rebuild kit for the carb was within about $30.00 of the whole carb and that was why we bought the whole new carb. We had cleaned out the fuel tank, installed an in line filter, etc. Anyway the problem turned out to be something simple and stupid. Right at the nipple fuel inlet of the carb, the was a tiny crack in the fuel line hose, more than likely a 3 or 4 dollar item. I cut the fuel line at the crack and like magic no more spitting gas and it runs better than new. One more thing, those of you who have knowledge of these types of issues, please continue to share them instead of forcing people to PAY an "EXPERT" for their miracle solutions. Thanks!

The float of the carburator is set incorrectly or sticking open, allowing the fuel to leave the bowl go into the throat and onto the filter. Ajust  and /or clean float, needle and seat.

The engine is pulling secondary air from the torn gasket area by the sound of it. It can't govern itself like that.
That must be fixed before any further tests !

There is debri or dirt in gas tank and eventually it gets sucked up and clogs the screen filter on the end of gas line. Drain gas tank and flush out a few times. let dry and put new gas in it. check your gas can, if it is metal, it may have rust in the bottom of it and it goes in the gas tank and clogs screen, make sure you have a clean gas can that you use to fill the generator.

Is there a gas filter on coleman 5000? runs until hot then shuts off

There is somewhat of a filter inside the tank, however your issue could be air lock or faulty oil sensor. Try running the generator with gas cap loose to allow more air into the tank. If cap is fault try to clean cap vent ports with carb cleaner or just replace the cap. If not fuel lock, remove wire from oil sensor and test again.

What brand of engine & horsepower is it?Also about how long was it stored or last time it was run? The reason I ask is if it was stored with gas in it & a fuel stabilizer wasn't added to it,your primary jet is plugged in the carburetor(reason it will only run while choked).

Sounds like you need to clean the carb ports, lines, jets, etc... purchase a carb spray cleaner with a tube to place on the spray head (Berryman's Chemtool B-12 is awesome). Take the carb loose from the generator, and remove the bowl, needle valve and spray carb cleaner thru all the holes, lines in the carb. Reinstall complete with air cleaner and retry... also if the gas is old, drain and replace with new...

Engine dies

Your carburator is gummed up !
Take the float bowl on the bottom of the carb and spray the main fuel jet out with cleaner, do this to the idle needle valve also. If that don't work pull the carb & take apart & soak overnight in parts cleaner & blow out all ports & orfices with compressed air.
Next time you store your generator with gas in it , use a fuel stabilizer !
Good luck !
