I called tech support. After a total of 40 minutes on hold (I was passed to 3 people), I found out that my problem was that when I downloaded my map update, I selected North America instead of Lower 49+PR. As I am a new GPS owner, I did not know that North America includes Canada which was not covered by my subscription. Bad on Garmin, IMHO for not making important details like that clear to us new owners.

Anyway, I re-downloaded the map update, selected Lower 49+PR and everything works fine.

Oh, wow, wish that had worked for me.

I'm now 10 hours in on trying to get mine to work after the "free new maps."

Unfortunately, I've followed every instruction under the sun; downloaded the file again (the THREE downloads, with a high speed internet connection, sucked 5 hours, including the "expansion time." ) Reinstalled. No soap.

Tried creating an "unlock file" in the garmin subdirectory. Got it in. No good.

Tried bypassing the no detailed maps screen; got to the tools/wrench, but when I get to the map info, where you're supposed to be able to turn it on, it's greyed out.

I had the lower 49 +PR, so that's not the problem either.

I've decided to return the unit, but if anyone finds an other answer before it goes back tomorrow, I'll give it one more try.

I think the basic answer here is: settle for what comes on the unit, because if you try to upgrade, you'll finish it off. Since I only used the unit for one day before this happened, I have a useless paperweight.

  • Anonymous Apr 11, 2009

Same thing. Spent hours downloading update "City Navigator Lower 49 States+PR NT 2010.10, Deluxe, Apr 09" and can't get them unlocked. Tried the gmapprom.unl thing and still nothing. I copied and pasted the unlock code from mygarmin page but it doesn't seem to help. Mapinfo button on nuvi is not usable (not hightlighted) so I can't go in there and make sure the appropriate boxes are checked.

I even downloaded the map again and that didn't help...

    Anyone have a clue?

Same problem here... just bought this thing today and tried to do the update...

  • Anonymous Apr 12, 2009

I had the same problem. Thanks for the correction. I guess I will spend another 10 hours re-registering and downloading. Thanks Garmin!!!

  • myndb0mb Apr 13, 2009

Haha, add another "couldn't leave well enough alone" to the list. Class action suit anyone? Garmin is full of idiots and has been for years - it's a great unit, but the people behind the software are retards. Signs of a **** programmer -when units in the field bomb...did I test that version withat that unit?? nahhhh, it'll work... it always works.. hahaha

if anyone figures this one out let me know..

  • ekleslie Apr 13, 2009

I have this same problem and I didn't do any updates. How do I get it back and working again?? I need it for Saturday.

  • Anonymous Apr 13, 2009

    What does "+pr" stand for?

  • cyitexas Apr 15, 2009

Same problem, garmin stated that they made a error with the software update and stated to redownload the next day. Well I downloaded several times and encountered the same problem again. For anyone out there. Dont download the update or you will never get this garmin to work again. Its not worth the 45 minute wait on the phone with the tech support to tell you a solution that does not work.

  • bascombe2 Apr 22, 2009

Yes, same problem and same ridiculous wait times quoted to me on the phone. The updatThey've charged me 70 dollars and hours of my time to turn my functioning little GPS into a non-functioning piece of plastic.

    Outrageous.

  • Judy GII May 11, 2010

Clarification II: When I downloaded and reinstalled (I think I'm up to attempt 6) again, the installation did NOT ask me for any kind of ID or password or code, so that was a dashed hope.

One more interesting point: although the link in the MyGarmin web site states that this lis lower 49+Pr, I think 2009 (can't be sure because the Garmin download site has been down since at elast noon, Easter Sunday, any bets they're uploading a new file?) the downloaded filename is garmin_rnu_cnnant2010.exe

Someone earlier noted that they accidentally downloaded the NA files (which apparently include Canada.) I didn't have any choice: what I got (whether mislabeled or the wrong file completely, and my money is on both) is ALL I could get to.

  • Judy GII May 11, 2010

Update from Judy GII: Absolutely no soap so far, (read my tale of woe, it got worse) so I went back to the downloads page and noticed something: on the downloads page it says that we're supposed to HAVE to enter the code that appears. I have a pretty good memory: IF I had ever been asked through out the FIVE times I've done this for a code, I would have remembered entering it.

Am now downloading again: I wonder if they've put up a new file. It has the same name. If it asks for the code, and I put it in and it works, I'll let you all know.

Otherwise, next time my Marine sergeant son goes near the PX, it goes back. I got to use it for ONE day before I got the notification taht I could update their free update, which effectively turned the unit into a paperweight.

At this point, I'm convinced that Garmin has put up a bad file. I will try

I was having the same problem. NO DETAILED MAPS FOUND SUPPORT ROUTING & SO ON. I called Garmin this morning & I thought I would be on the phone forever with the gentleman. But I was on for less then 10 minutes. The guy asked me to connect my Nuvi to the computer using a usb cable, then asked me to go into my computer & look for the device/drive that my Garmin is using. He then prompted me to open the file that says Garmin & asked me if there was this file that said gmapprom.unl. I told him no & then he sent me the file through an email. I had to open the file & get it into the Garmin file. Then he asked me to disconnect my Nuvi from my computer & it started right up & the problem was gone. If you do have the same problem I am willing to email you the file he sent me if you would like because there is no possble way to get the file from just searching on the computer. Let me know. I had the same problem. What you do is place your finger in the lower right corner where the green button would be and cut it on. When the prompt comes up, click yes. when the no detailed maps comes up again, hold down the green button again. You should then be able to upload the maps.

The downloaded map file (ex: "Garmin_RMU_CNNANT2010C.exe") contains all of North America, and you must select the correct subsection (ex: "Lower 49 States+PR") that you purchased, which is listed on your Garmin myMaps page (My.Garmin.com).

I am a GPS newbie as well and selected "all of North America" when installing my free nuvi 205 map update. A mistake that's too easy to make, esp. considering Garmin still has very little info about selecting the correct map subsection listed on their support site.

You do NOT need to re-download the huge map file, thankfully, but you must re-install (30+ min) to choose the correct map subsection.

"Bad on Garmin, IMHO for not making important details like that clear to us new owners." My thoughts exactly.

I just got off the phone with tech support. They have a very complicated fix that involves remote accessing into your computer and editing files, etc. They said it would take over an hr, I declined. The problem apparently is that the nuvi 200 can't support canada, but the maps contain canada = problem. and btw, i downloaded "City Navigator Lower 49 States+PR NT 2010.10, Deluxe, Apr 09" and got the same problem. this filename ends in a "B", apparently that's the "fixed one" but acc tech support it's only fixed in the sense that they can waste over an hr w' u fixing it w' u, whereas the older files are unfixable.
I'm just gonna wait til they really fix and upload those files.
Hope that helps.

Just check in with Gramin, have the same problem. They said anyone who downloaded the maps between 4/7 and 4/25 would have to download it again because the problem has been fixed. The file name is the same and you may have to indicate if you
have the lower 49 states that orginally came with your GPS.

You can download new maps..........free......................but..........

I had this problem last year with my garmin 200 and when I called they said that I was out of the 60 day time window for a free map upgrade but they would give it to me anyway. They gave me detailed instructions on how to download a new map free of charge but they didnt explain which selection replaced what I already had on mine.
As a result, I downloaded the wrong maps and have much less detail. Even though its the "2009" version, its less acurate than my old maps were. But its worth a shot, better than paying for them.
