Question about Acer Aspire 5100 Notebook

Acer 5100 laptop doesn't work on ac or charger battery

I have a Acer 5100 laptop that will not work on ac power nor charge the battery. The lights to show any power at all do not even come one. Not even blink. If you put in a charged battery though it will work fine till the battery is dead, but then nothing again. You will have to charge to battery in another laptop for it to work.

I have already tested the power supply and the voltages are correct. With the power supply in the pins on the ac port inside read 18.8v. There are no cracks or broken solder on the av port either. I'm pretty stumped at this point.

The ac port is perfectly snug and doesn't look like any crack or broken solder. A bad motherboard? How could it be a bad board if it still works fine on battery? I don't know much about laptops so not doubting you at all.

I have taken it COMPLETELY apart haha. It is all in pieces. I wanted to get down to bare minimal to start checking things. It doesn't seem to be the power jack to me. It is nice and sturdy and doesn't look like any cracks or loose solder. I actually think it has been replaced as it is a manual solder and not machine quality if you know what I mean. This one has the power connector right on the board, and then another board on top of that that actually controls the power if that makes sense.

I tested the plug and it had 18.8v on it where the plug/bored meet. I'll take some pictures later to show what I mean, but I'm sure you know.

Pics are up. The only white flat piece I see is behind the VGA port. Let me know if you see it or where/what else to test.

Motherboard is bad and will have to be replaced unless of course the AC Jack on the back of the laptop is loose. That would cause the ac adapter not to charge and then you would have to take the motherboard out and put solder on each leg on the bottom of the ac jack to make sure it stays in place then the ac adapter can charge the battery properly.

Even going thru the solder method the motherboard could still be bad and have nothing to do with the ac jack.

It's most likely what dogey posted. Motherboards don't go bad as often as people think, they just replace them because they don't know what else to do. Power jacks do go bad quite often, from constantly plugging the power cord in and out. If the jack needs to be replaced, Radio Shack either has one just like it or one that will fit.

If you have a meter, plug in the power cord and make sure the juice goes through the jack. The side connection sometimes weakens and either the side or the center doesn't make proper contact. I'm not sure what your unit is but, the voltage is normally below 20 volts.

I can't tell if it's PD1 or FD1. Check this diode for a short. It should only check continuity in one direction.

You need to take the thing apart and check the plug on the board to make sure that it is not broken loose from where it is soldered to the board.. I have had to do a few of these because of that very problem. I can tell you that it is a pain to take apart after you get the screws out it also snaps together some what anyway i do believe that that is your problem with your laptop. If it works ok with a hot battery then the mother board is ok the power plug maybe on a separate board i just got done doing a acer that had a separate board for the power plug. If i remember right the cord plugged into the right side of the laptop as you look at the screen if so i think it will have a separate little board that it is soldered to you might be able to take all of the screws out and lift up that side and get the board out not onehoundred percent on that go slow and easy you can fix it.

you are on the right track should be some surface mount diodes and mybe even fuse that is surface mount that could be open. If the solder joints dont look that good then i would resolder them and recheck for power going through the plug to board. The fuse should be a little white ceramic flat spec on the board inline with the hot post of plug which should be the center post being the + side.

I have an acer aspire 5100 and here recently the

Could be a bad battery and/or charger/AC Adaptor/DC Connector. Try to isolate the problem by removing the battery and then plugging the laptop charger in and starting the pc up. It should boot on the AC adapter alone. If it won't boot on the AC adaptor or it flickers and flashes while on the AC adaptor, I would first suspect the AC adaptor or the DC connector on the laptop (try wiggling the power plug at the PC to try and check the connector). If it behaves while on the AC adaptor without the battery present, I would suspect the battery. Either way, you may have to replace something.

My acer aspire 7520-5185 will not turn on

Hello. There is a hardware failure with the laptop not the AC charger. AC chargers have some range of protections of their own. If the power requirements of the laptop are bigger then what the charger can handle, the charger will turn off. Also other parameters can bring the charger offline. In your case, you have a problem with a small chip, the battery charge controller unit, witch regulates the amount of current required to propperly charge the battery. When this thing fails, the charging requirements for the battery are reported rong and the AC charger is forced to give more power then necesary. This results in disconnection of the AC charger ( an internal fail safe of the
AC charger) and the laptop to swich back to battery power. When the laptop is turned off, it can charge the battery because the power requirements are low, having all processor, main board, hard disk etc turned off. Therefore the AC charger can handle the load. However you will need to have it checked by a service center as it is a hardware fault. Both AC charger and laptop needs that check.
The charge controll circuit needs to be replaced probably. It will be a somewhat expensive repair. Don't buy any other battery untill you have the laptop checked.

BATTERY DOESN'T CHARGE ON MY ACER ASPIRE ONE MOD#KAV60

Sounds like the battery might be bad. Try another battery in the laptop and see if it charges. If it does then you know the other battery is bad.
If you try another known working battery and it still wont charge, then try another AC Adapter. If you still cant get the laptop battery to charge then at that point the motherboard is bad because you will have tried another working batter and another working ac adapter.

Acer 5100 charge light is blinking while plugged in

well either you have a bad battery, or a bad charger, or your ACPI settings are not correct in BIOS, you must check each one, First you must check the Power Adapter, usually with a multimeter set to Volts DC and see if it the same as what is written on power supply, Next check the batteries voltage with a meter and see if that is OK, really the only real way is to substitute the battery, and expensive guess? Also as said check your ACPI settings are OK in BIOS and Windows power settings too. Use your manual for reference.

Laptop Power

Not the charger. It is either the battery or the charge circuit in the laptop. Most are on the mother boards but some have a changable dc to dc inverter board

Acer Aspire 5100 Red Battery Light

The Aspires should have no issue booting without the battery installed. Have you done a static reset? (i.e. hold the power switch for 20/30 seconds without power or battery in) And the voltage range on the Aspire 5100 should be +19v - +20.5v on the inner part of the connector so it might be worth checking that the power adapter is outputing correctly.
If it works without battery, then it can be checked by testing the voltage between pins 1 and 6 on the battery (the ones either end) and should be 7.5v or above if the battery is charging correctly.
Hope that gives you a starting point, if you've done all those things already then appologies and best of luck with it.

Charge problem!

It's one of two things, the more likely of the two is that that battery is totaly shot, laptop battery's are usually only good for 1.5 years then loose there ability to retain a charge. It sounds like that one's just done. Unfortunatly that those batterys cost more than there worth, 100 bucks or more. The second possibility is the power cord, is that the original power cord for that? Or was on that was bought aftermaket, some aftermarket chargers will only power your laptop and not charge. Also remove the battery and check for corrison. You can build your own battery fot a a laptop if got a few hours time, and are good with a soldering gun. You get the litium ion cells you need for about 40 bucks. Follow the below link for a step by step on how to build your own battery http://www.metacafe.com/watch/479447/laptop_battery_hack_youll_save/

Charging problem!

Simply put, your battery is broken. Lithium Ion batteries in laptops can have bad cells. Inside your laptop battery are numerous smaller lithium ion batteries about the size of a AA battery. One of these is bad, maybe a lot more than one. If you are very tech savvy you can dismantle the battery and using a multimeter figure out which cell has gone bad, then simply order a replacement cell online and solder it back on. If you're a regular user I would highly recommend you don't attempt this. I would suggest you check on ebay for somebody selling a replacement battery for your laptop. That would be the easiest and cheapest route.
