Question about Mtd Garden

18 5 hp 42 deck mtd shift on the go Drive quit working

I can see smoke coming from underneath. I just replaced the blades and belt. This was given to me and I don't have any manuals for it. I'm not sure how the drive works. I had a Snapper riding mower many years ago and it had a plate on the bottom of the engine and the drive ran off of it. (Not sure how to describe it.)

SOURCE: middle blade in 3 blade mower for ride on does not seem to cut?

Raise the deck and reach into the bad blade and try and turn it. If it turns easily then try to wiggle the blade up and down. If it moves up and down then the bearings are bad. You will have to remove the shaft and install new bearings. It is best to take it to a shop that can replace them. If you try and beat them off with a hammer you will probably mess up the shaft. I know from experience. You might be able to buy the whole new shaft with bearings already installed pretty cheap. Just find your part number and go to www.jackssmallengines.com and input the part number into the search box. They have reasonable shipping prices. You can also go to your local small engine repair shop they might even have free shipping.

Good luck and let me know if this helps.

Vibrating 38" deck on MTD yardman mower

Hi, first replace the blade spindle bearings, if you had to hit them to free them up the bearings are shot. Secondly, replace the deck belt. Because you engaged the blades with a siezed bearing the belt will have a worn section where the v will be thinner thus causing the vibration as it passes through the pulleys. Regards Phil.

My MTD riding lawnmower is burning thru the new belts I just purchased. The new belts are 954-0371A which replaces 754-0371A. The old style belt lasted 5 years. Even before engaging the clutch, the belt...

My idea is not about the belts, but is about the deck. If the tensioning mechanism on the deck is getting stuck in an intermittant position than the belt may be just tight enough to turn blades while slipping through the pulleys, this may cause enough friction to start melting your belts. If this is the case you will have to remove your mower deck and see what is preventing the mechanism from functioning properly.

Loud noise when clutch is disengaged

Something is locked up underneath, something is preventing your belt from spinning. I recommend going under and inspecting the blade area and also belt area especially if the deck is full of debris. You might even have a frozen bearing or something like that anyhow you need to do a little investigation, pronto buddy. Good Luck

Smoke when blades engaged on yardman 42'' yard tractor

The oil on your pulley could definitely be the culprit. You need friction in order for your belts to work properly.
