First, if it is brand-new, then read the User Guide(s) that came with the computer.
Second, if you still have questions, take it back to the store where you purchased the computer, and get help from them. After all, you just paid them $1000 -- they need to "earn" that money, by giving "support" to their customers.
Third, take your laptop to a "wireless hot-spot" (such as a Starbucks Coffee) and click "View Available Networks".
You LAN is not connecting to your Internet Service Provider, hence the LAN has a red X and therefore cannot open a WEB page.
Check your LAN cable, make aure it is connected to both the LAN port on the modem and the LAN port on the computer.
The red X on the LAN should disappear when the network connection is re-established.
Also power off your modem for 1/2 min, and power it on again and restart your computer.
Let me know if you have further problems and any error messages.
What you need first is to install the wireless driver for your wireless card in your computer. If you don't have one you need to purchase a wireless card.
Then read the following info to decide what type of Internet access you require.
Wireless connections to the Internet can be achieved by several methods and it depends upon the method of delivery by the Internet Service Provider in your location. The most common is by DSL and cable, the modems that are used with DSL and cable connection can have a built-in wireless router. Your computer will require a wireless card to connect to the modem/wireless router and the range is restricted to approx. 100 ft depending where the wireless router is located within the building.
The laptop's wireless card can be a built-in device or a plug-in device eg a PCMCIA card or a USB device. and these can also connect to a wifi hot spot in locations such as McDonalds. Star Bucks etc.
There is another method that can connect into the Internet that uses a USB wireless device that connects to a G3 network, bacically a type of mobile transmission and the device is locked into a specific Internet Service Provider. This method gives a wider mobile range (even across states) of connecting to the Internet but usually at a higher cost.
Basically you need to see what the Internet Service Providers offer in your location. Beware of the costs of the various plans they offer in broadband speed, their download limits and the penality for exceeding the limits etc.
When you decide which method you choose, you need to consider setting up your wireless network securely to prevent unauthorized access.
The definition of the sound card, is a chipset integrated into the main board of your laptop, in order to provide sound to your built-in speakers, or to the headphone jack on your laptop. Internet LAN (or Local Area Network) is a port located either on the side or the rear of your computer, where you would plug in a Cable/DSL High-Speed Internet connection, using an Ethernet cable (also called RJ-45). Wireless LAN is the same idea, only instead of using an ethernet cable to provide you access to the internet, it uses a wireless signal or radio frequency, to connect to a wireless access point (usually provided by a wireless router in the area). In order for you to use your built in wireless card on your Acer, you need to have a way to convert your internet connection in your home to a wireless LAN so your laptop can see it and connect to it. This is done with a wireless router. They are relatively inexpensive and simple to set up.
In order to connect at public wi fi areas such as those that are found at hotels and starbucks, then all you need to do is turn on your computer and make sure your wireless is turned on on your Acer. It should automatically alert you to any wireless signals it finds and you can connect that way.
