Question about Whirlpool 25.6 cu. ft. Side-by-Side Refrigerator with In-Door-Ice Dispensing System

1 Answer

I have ice in the ice compartment but when I push for crushed or cubed ice nothing comes out. Despenser runs but does not allow any type of ice to come through the despesner.

Do you have the ice bucket on the door? if so there's 2 things to check

  • 1st is an ice jam in the door funnel. you would need to remove the bucket and inspect the funnel.
  • 2nd is a dispenser coupler that is either frozen in the down position or actually stripped out. to check this while the bucket is removed check the metal piece that is in the very center of the bottom of the bucket (it's either 3 prong shaped or octagonal) then check where it mates with the piece on the door its self. if this piece is octagonal shaped just make sure its not stripped out. if its 3 prong then it should move up and down. if it doesnt then using a hair dryer heat it up until it springs up and you should be back in business.
Let me know if that works. If not post your model number so I can see which unit you have. thanks Peyton

Hi Don - I see you are having difficulty changing the type of ice that is coming out of your refrigerator. Below are instructions on how to adjust this.

· Take out the ice bin to access the switch in the freezer.
· Underneath the ice bin is a metal rod.
· In the back of the freezer there is a square hole from where the rod came. Put your finger in this hole.
· You should feel a plastic lever. If it's up, push it down. If it's down, push it up.
· Put the ice bin back and try for ice again. You should receive crushed and cubed ice at this time.
· If you push the lever up or down and it doesn't stay in place you should contact an authorized service technician for repair.

If the instructions above do not solve the problem, I am fairly confident that an authorized service agent will be able to restore your appliance to its normal operating condition. You can often locate a qualified service technician on the manufacturer website

Thanks for allowing me the opportunity to assist you!

My samsung rfg297aa dispenses crushed ice whether its set on crushed or cubed. why will it no longer dispense cubes?

This answer probably comes too late for you (you posted the question 9 months ago), but I want to record it here for posterity, since I had the same problem, and searching on Google for it brought up your question.
Anyway, I managed to fix this very problem by removing an ice cube that was wedged in the ice dispensing mechanism. The way this unit works is that it pushes the ice cubes through the mechanism, which always rotates the "crushing blades". When you select "cubed" ice, a lever opens up the exit chute wider, which causes the blades to simply push out the ice cubes as they pass through. When you select "crushed" ice, the lever closes the "exit" for the ice cubes to be narrower, so that the ice cubes can't be pushed through by the blades, and instead get crushed by them. I had an ice cube wedged in there that had the same effect of closing the exit to be narrower. Removing it fixed the problem.
You might want to collect all the ice cubes that have accumulated in the ice bucket in a container, empty the ice bucket, clean out the mechanism from any obstructions, and then put the ice cubes back into the ice bucket.

Ice maker crushes even when it is in the cube

If you pull out your ice bucket and look on the bottom you will see a long brass colored rod. Now, if you look inside your freezer section. you will see the slot the rod enters each and every time you insert your ice maker bucket. In the down position (normal) it produces crushed ice, When you switch the lever in the front for ice cubes, there is a plunger that lifts the rod and produces the combination that only allows ice cubes to come out. I would first check the plunger behind the panel and see if it is free.If it is not free it can cause the ice to be crushed...

My ice despenser has a switch for cubed and crushed ice. I have the switch on cubed and only crushed ice comes out

usually there is a device in the ice bucket that activates or deactivates for cubed or crushed..that is controled by another (stirup) behind the bucket, that may be frozen up, thaw the whole refer...then see what happens. It might be in the switch...as well, if so call some one
