some new info. im finding that its crashing when i run applications eg nero, word etc on top of everything else. when i try to burn osmething i get an error message saying c drive is lo on memory and cant run the appl. i checked the c drive, whihc is an 80 gig. i have 6 gigs left. could this cause this sudden crashing where the laptop just shuts off when working online etc? also when plugged in the laptop works a bit quicker, screen a bit brighter etc. im wondering if when plugged in,on top of low gigs its creating an unstable situation. what do u think???

ok-it hasnt crashed in 3 days. today it did. i think i know why. i did free up mare space from 6 to about 20 gigs. that seemed to help. but it crashed today. i think it may be getting overheated is suddenly shutting off esp if im running several programs. my belkin cushtop seems to help keep it from crashing. if im burning something it is likely to crash if its not on the cushtop. this is a new phenomenon in the 4 yrs ive had this machine. why? hwo can i check the laptop temp to see f it is staying normal or going above? this concerns me. thanks all!

im back. hasnt crashed since my last post on 3/15-now today alone its done it twice. it seems to happend esp when i try to run a set of programs ie like nero to burn etc.. i do not know hot to run bios and check for overheating -can someone explain. this is soo frustrating. and yes i freed up space-20 gigs free. this seemed to have helped much with things but now its doing it again.

it usually doesnt crash when on its belkin cushtop. well its done 2 times already today. help!

There are a couple of other things that you can try before taking it in. More info would help. Try only running on ac power with no battery. See if it crashes. Also, if you have a spare battery, try to reproduce with another battery. Let me know the results....

Feel the port where you plug the power adaptor in. Does it wiggle up and down a bit? If so, the power converter is probably shorting because of wear on the soldered connections from plugging and unplugging so many times ( 4 years worth) Usually about $100-150 to get repaired.

That is not a lot of space for the computer to operate, especially depending on if windows is managing a page file for extra memory, which it does by default. Delete as much data as possible, maybe get more than 10GB of free space. Also, try running the laptop by itself and see how long it will run with just the desktop showing. If it will run for a considerable longer amount of time that way, I would say that the free space is the issue......keep me posted...

I hadn't charged my Sony Vaio model PCG-61611L for a couple days. Then when I finally plugged it in to charge, it won't turn on. I even left it plugged in for a few days and still nothing. It has...

Try A Hard Reset

Remove the battery and charger/ac adapter/power cord from your Sony Vaio laptop, press and hold the power button for 20 seconds to discharge any residual current inside the laptop.

This clears your RAM and is like a hardware reset.

Replace the battery and charger/ac adapter/power cord
and turn your laptop on.

If that does't work try removing ram and reinstall. Sometime this works with these laptops.

Hi, i'm having sony vaio (VGN NW380F) laptop. I bought this laptop just 1 year back. I'm having problem since last week, the laptop gets power off automatically. Its not specific to Operating system or any...

It could be a problem with the motherboard, basically because the power supply to the laptop is built in to the motherboard. I would first check the battery though. Sometimes this can happen with a bad battery, even if the laptop is plugged in. Try removing the battery and using the laptop while it's plugged in with no battery.

If it works fine with no battery and power cord connected, I would get a new battery.

If it is still a problem with the battery out, it's likely it could be a problem with the power supply that's part of the motherboard. If that's the case, I would try to call Sony and see if it is covered under warranty....or if they have had problems with this. With a year old laptop, this should not be failing like this.

Wireless N and 4 to 5 year old sony vaio's

Any VAIO Computer released 4 to 5 years ago is not equipped with a wireless card that supports 802.11N WLAN standards. All the older VAIO Computer supports 802.11 a/b/g wireless standard. Because of this hardware compatibility issues the Computer is crashing.

For this issue Sony has not released any general update. However, you may visit the Sony site for specific model to check for any update release to address this issue.
