Question about Gateway GT5056 PC Desktop
I have a Gateway Desktop that is 6 years old. I need to remove the hard disc before I dispose of it. Please tell me where to start.
This procedure depends a lot on the exact configuration of your Gateway. They are good at making proprietary towers that are different from all others. Unplug all cords from the back of the computer. remove screws along the back on the side of the tower. ( Most of the time it is the right hand side if you are facing the back of the tower :) ) Pull back on the side panel. If it slides back then you're in!! Inside there should be two light or dark grey cables that are flat and about 2 inches wide. one will go up to the top of the tower to the cd player. the other will go down lower to a 1 inch thick rectangular device that is your hard drive. If you are trying to save your hd for use, then be careful at this point. If you are not then just tear away!! Remove the grey (IDE) cable from the back of the hd. Then remove the 1 inch wide white power cable connector that is now exposed on the other side of the ide cable. Good. Now here is where it can be very different depending on your model. The hd will either be screwed directly to the chassis on both sides, or it will be encased in a plastic sled device that will have a latch and will slide out. If it is in the sled, then locate the tab, push in, and pull back. Voila! HD is out. If it is screwed directly into the chassis, then you will need to take off the other side cover of the tower in order to access the screws on the other side of the HD. Then remove. If you are going to store for reuse, it is best to store in a static free bag, otherwise, dispose of according to local regulations for e-waste.
