I'm trying to get Linux working on a new El Cheapo Grande e-machine...
($400, in case you're curious.) I've managed to successfully get RedHat 6.0
installed (with the help of the Unix admin from work), but Xconfigurator
and/or SuperProbe aren't getting X configured correctly. My hardware
situation is this:
e-machines 333cs (Cyrix 333 mhz)
Sony Trinitron MultiScan 100ES (or Sony CPD 100ES, I think is the same
thing)
ATI Rage IIc AGP video card (been using ATI Mach64 Rage IIc 3D with
Xconfigurator, I think)
The info I get from Windows 98 (where the display is fine):
1024 x 768 24 bit
v-freq = 85 Hz
h-freq = 68.59 KHz
Everytime X starts, I can read the windows, but the whole thing jiggles and
there is a streaky vertical line running down the left side.
Anybody dealt with anything like this particular hardware combination
before?
Help!
Thanks,
Mike Hearne

the values, in your config file for X, which correspond to the original VGA
standard. These are, if I recall correctly, 31.5 for vert, 60Hz for Horiz, and
a res of 640x480. Use the recommended "server". Make sure that you have the
server symlinked to X, and fire up X. When you see that you get a nice, sharp,
stable image, you save the file, and then begin to edit it, changing one thing
at a time. For example, you could then kick up the color resolution from the
16 color VGA standard, up to maybe 16 BIT color. When that works fine, then
you save the config file, and maybe then try getting an 800x600 resolution
going, and so forth, always saving the last successful config. file.
If you simply say to yourself, well these are the values I see in Windoz,
therefore this is what I'm going to attempt right off the bat in Linux, you
will trip up. This isn't windoz. The values specified below ARE quite
ergonomical, but not easily duplicated, initially, by a Linux newbie. Take a
couple of extra hours or days to configure X.
If necessary, print out the How Tos for XFree86 and have them handy to refer to
editing the config file. Remember that there are usually four different
configuration utilties included with Red Hat, so if one of them doesn't do it
correctly, then either edit the config file by hand, OR simply use one of the
other utilities. Also, remember that SuperProbe is YOUR BEST FRIEND. It will
tell you everything you need to know. Make sure you know where the X log file
is and examine it after everytime you attempt to run X. It will tell you
PRECISELY where X encounters an error or trips up.
Don't forget either a couple of places to peruse. The FAQ in this NG at
and # that help!!

until it didn't jiggle and I was happy with the display. I believe it can't hurt
as long as you don't let it jiggle too long.
