Question about John Deere Gilmour Traveling Sprinkler - 4010j

1 Answer

Sprinkler will not move forward properly

I turn on the water and sprinkler turns and begins to move forward. Shortly thereafter, it stops moving and makes a clicking sounds, the wheel attempts to move forward but actually makes this clicking noise and moves backwards. It continues to do this from this point on. I took it apart and all of the gears appear fine. Does it need greased? Anyone with similar problem and the solution will be appreciated.

I have 2 John Deere 4010 traveling sprinklers and they both do the same thing. I took them apart and the plastic worm gear has flat spot on them. I am having difficulty finding replacement parts.

Rainbird troubleshooting

It could be not enough water pressure, dirt on the shaft or it is worn out assuming the parts are all there. They are not very expensive you might just want to buy a new one.

My sprinkler head is stuck spaying in one spot and I can't figure out how to adjust the range and distance of it.

Sounds like you have a bucket impact sprinkler. These are problematic as they tend to beat themselves into non-operation from the moving parts involved and the impacts. They stop turning for a number of reasons, low water pressure, dirt and debris filling the bucket impeding rotation, plants covering the sprinkler etc. If no debris is found and others continue to work on same zone the water pressure is probably unchanged it may just be tired. I suggest replacing it using a pop-up rotor preferably a Hunter PGP-ADJ or PGJ-ADJ Rotor as rotors have only 1 moving part a gear which is sealed inside the sprinkler making them very dependable.

Orbit traveling won't move

I just had the same thing happen to me. You have to turn the arms counter clockwise...opposite of the tightening bolts, and have them pointing in opposite directions to get it to turn. If the unit moves backwards, turn them another 180deg to the opposite directions, and it should go forward.

Model 57882 9 station timer I did set up station 1 where do I begin in order to set up station 3

Question is not clear.
Do you have programming problem with the timer?
Or problem locating sprinkler heads?
Or a sprinkler valve problem?
Add a comment with detailed information.

Sprinkler timer turns ON-and-OFF.
Timer does not advance the sprinkler to next station. The sprinkler valve advances to next station when timer turns OFF.
For example, when timer turns ON, then station 1 starts watering.
Timer turns off, and then sprinkler valve automatically advances to station 2.
Timer turns on again, and station 2 starts watering.

I have 4 zones can run them manually; but they will not come on the automatic setting. Springs are strong; timer itself keeps accurate time. I did read inside the box about a "Silver Pin"...

If zones are not advancing, then 1) Clock motor is not rotating dial > replace clock motor, 2) on-off trippers are worn down > replace trippers, 3) or the day skipper is set to skip all days and all skipper pins are pushed down, 4) or sprinkler valve is bad.

The sprinkler timer dial rotates each 24 hours. The trippers cause sprinkler head to turn on zone 1 for example. Zone 1 waters until the dial rotates to part of dial with no tripper. Without a tripper on the dial, the timer turns off circuit to sprinkler. At this point, the sprinkler valve mechanically advances to zone 2 and waits for timer to turn off again. The timer does not advance sprinkler to next zone > the sprinkler valve is designed to advance each time circuit turns off. The timer just turns on and off. When next tripper rotates around, the timer turn on the circuit and zone 2 begins to water.

The silver pin inserted at 12midnight position is for advancing the day skipper wheel.

My John Deere traveling sprinkler is moving backwards all of a sudden. How do I get it to go forwards

The wheels are driven by the spinning of the water wand. Turning the tips so the wand spins either clockwise or counter clockwise will determine which direction your sprinkler will travel. If it's going backwards, turn the tips so the wand spins in the opposite direction it is spinning now.

THE SPRINKLER GOES ONLY CLOCK WISE WILL NOT TURN BACK

An exact model number would help. I'm assuming you'r refering to a lawn sprinkler that you can set say to turn 180 degrees, and then reverse back to the beginning and start over. Most sprinklers have two adjustable tabs that determine where it stops. You move these around the dial to set the stop and return positions. Then the top part of the sprinkler that moves, has a tab that can be flipped down for fwd-rev operation, or left raised for 360 degree coverage.0282cdd.jpg
