Hello KC0DED,
Are you using an old computer with DOS ? You cannot use a 'modern' computer, even Windows 2000 will not work. I had to use an old piece of junk and use the serial cable. What software and what computer are you using. You can contact me via QRZ if you want more info.

Hi I have a vertex vx2100 radio and I need to know if I can use it as a police radio scanner

Yes. The Vertex VX2100 is a VHF radio which can be programmed to frequencies between 134-174 MHz. You would need to program in the frequencies you are wanting to scan as receive only (no transmit) into the 8 channels of the radio. You would need to acquire the frequencies you need, as well as programming equipment, or take the radio to a dealer for programming.

Best regards.

Vertex VX4600. when the anntenna is connected and the radio is keyed it pulls the power supply low and the radio turns off. Without the antenna, the radio functions normally. Cable checks open to gro

Is your power supply large enough? It sounds more like too many amps are being drawn or the power supply has a problem. New power supplies are not as good as the "old" ones and develop some strange issues, like not enough power (amps) actually getting through. I assume heavy gauge wire. How many watts are you transmitting with?

Can only use one channel on my vertex standard v-231

Hi, again Craig,

Now that I have the Make/Model of your radio, I can give you advice.

You wish to program your set with frequencies, so here is the best way to do so.

Join yahoo group SPECIFIC to your radio MAKE/MODEL, the team there will assist you with great advice and valuable info, plus you can download manuals, diagrams and other great stuff for your radio.

I hope you are happy with my advice.

Cheers,
Peter

How to program a Portable Vertex VX-427-4-5 channel?

Hi,

your post is a little confusing, but let's start with your hand held HH, you can download a copy of the user manual if you don't already have one. I'll get to that shortly,...

Then you ask how to program a frequency/channel into a scanner radio, they are two different beasts.

Also you left out the Make/Model of the scanner, which is a requirement, as no two radio scanners are equally designed.

So with out this info, I cannot assist you.

Now back to the Vertex HH, my advice is to join yahoo group specific to your radio Make/Model, the team there will require as much info as you can provide so as to assist you, you can also download manuals, diagrams and other goodies for you radio, please do not refer to your scanner, as they only deal with your Vertex Make/Model, the scanner is for a different yahoo group, so you can join both separately and kill two birds with one stone.

I hope this info is useful to you.

Cheers, Peter

How many watts do midland walkie talkie xt20 have?

These are FRS/GMRS (Family Radio Service/ General Mobile Radio Service) radios. The legal power limit for FRS is 500 milliwatts - or 1/2 watt. GMRS on the other hand is limited to a much higher 50 watt level. The wattage you transmit determines if you need to have a GMRS license. Most GMRS radios are in the .5- 5 watt range however.

The likelihood of your XT20 being a 1/2 watt out on both FRS & GMRS is very good. For Midland (or anyone else for that matter) to produce a radio with a 1 watt output that can run on just 3 "AAA" batteries would be quite the feat! If Midland did do this, the radio's battery life would extremely short. To balance the needs of light weight and battery life, output power needs to be reduced.

Claims of 20 miles is crazy. If you had these radios on mountain tops 20 miles apart - with a clear line of sight between them - MAYBE - you could hear one on the other. This would need to be done under only the most ideal conditions. The actual distance you can expect to get out of a pair of any brand FRS radios in "real world" conditions (line of sight blocked by trees and buildings) is about a mile.

An FRS/GMRS radio limited to 1/2 watt output when used on a GMRS frequency that is close enough to access a GMRS repeater system could easily cover 20+ miles. The key here is having a license and access to the repeater. Repeater owners take a dim view of unlicensed users access their repeater.

Channels 1 thru 7 are FRS and GMRS. That is, if transmitting .5 watts, you can use it as FRS. If transmitting more than .5 watts, you will need a valid GMRS license.

Channels 8 - 14 are expressly for FRS. Only .5 watts transmit power is permitted.

Channels 15 - 22 are expressly for GMRS at any transmit power up to 50 watts. Even if transmitting .5 watts, you MUST have a valid GMRS license on these frequencies.

I know - more infor than you wanted and no vclear cut number for wattage - but there's no info on these radios on Midland's site or anywhere else that I could find. Good luck!

Catalog # 21-1926 FRS radio manual needed. Else tell me if I can change channels 1 - 7 to LO power out. Suspect they are hard coded for HI power out.

  • No the power is unadjustable for any of the channels. The first 7 channels are 5 watts and authorized for use with a license only, Even though everyone uses them just though I would give you the heads up on that. The remainder of the channels are 4 watts and all transmit on UHF (Ultra High Frequency)
