Suddenly the agitator in the washing machine quit working. After researching I replaced the agitator dogs (they had disapated basically) and I thought for sure that would do it but it hasn't. Still doesn't move. Don't have a belt to check for (I don't think) It's not the lid switch, I checked that, drain line is free and clear and there doesn't seem to be a problem with the motor coupler that I can see that is. If anyone can direct me in the right direction I would be so grateful! I told my husband I could fix this myself and I'm determined not to put my foot in my mouth! Thanks!!

depends on what u mean by agitator works fine on spin? it doesnt do anything on spin cycle cause its not suppose to? if ur saying ur not getting any wash agitation? then I suspect ur cam dogs inside agitator are bad? remove the 7/16 bolt nut and remove top of agitator and u will see the cam dogs underneath it. there fairly cheap like 5-10 bucks for a set, if u can push the agitator back and forth when its all together in tub, and its catching the teeth and not easy to move back in forth, their not bad, but if u have no resistance then they are bad
If your agitator is not moving and if you can move it both directions with your hand, then the dogs are worn out. This is an easy fix all you need to do is find the brand and model of your WM (washing Machine) and order the dogs online (or go to your nearest appliance parts shop) they look like a dog ears shape made out of a very strong "plastic". Hi, If the washer spins properly but the agitator does not work, it could be the dog kit needs replaced. If the washer does not agitate or spin, it is probably the coupler.
Put the washer in wash cycle with no laundry in it and see if the lower prt of the agitator moves. If the agitator moves, try and hold the upper half of the agitator and see if it will only move one direction. The agitaor dog kit is designed to only let the top part of the agiator to grab one way. When they go bad, they can make some noise. To replace the dog kit in the agitator, remove the top cap/rinse dispenser and the inner bolt cover. Remove the 7/16” bolt and lift the agitator out of the washer. Separate the 2 halfs of the agitator and replace the dog kit inside the upper part of the agitator. Please let me know if this helps you or if I can assist you further. Thanks Vic
Your agitator dogs must be replaced.
With a flat blade screwdriver pry off the top cover on the agitator.
Remove the 7/16 bolt inside.
Pull up on the agitator and remove it.
Purchase the agitator dog kit from the appliance parts store.About $10.00.
probably just what is known as agitator dogs just worn ..with no brand or model i assume it's a whirpool or kenmore ..1st remove softner dispenser (without brand can't say how it would come off ..some twist off some just pull off ) if agitator has cap underneath pull it off in center of agitator should be a bolt 7/16 if kenmore/whirlpool..remove it pull up on top half ..whole thing may come out if so just pull up sharply on top part..center part of top half comes out dogs are on it( 4 )again i'm assuming kenmore/whirlpool whirpool part # 80040 replace them and reassemble ..if any other brand will probably have to replace entire agitator..good luck
it sounds like the dogs are worn. try twisting the agitator post by hand,it should move freely in one direction then lock up going the other.its a pretty easy fix if they are.pry off the top of the agitator post off then remove the cap inside, there is a bolt that holds the post down.i'm pretty sure it's 7/16 in. once the bolt is loose, lift the whole agitator out of machine and with your hand inside post turn it upside downand let the dog holder slide out.watch how the dogs fit into the holder, replace with new dogs and reverse the removal process.
if the machine wont spin, check the lid switch. thats usually the cause of a no spin situation.other than that a wet vac is your best bet.hope that helps.
