I have a 2.8L diesel 1991 hilux surf and it sounds like it has stone in the bell housing, is this possible and are they hard to get out?

The oil should be fine, just make sure it is good quality oil.

Forth gear is when the input shaft is connected directly to the out put shaft by the sliding dog. 2 possible reasons 1 the pall that holds the selector shaft in position is jammed from possibly a broken spring ( remove the plug in the side/top of the box if you have one) or the connecting dog has broken a synchro ring and this is not allowing it to move back. It is possible that the inter connecting pin that prevents too shafts from moving at the same time is stuck as well.

Have your primary clutch master cylinder (found on the engine's firewall) and the secondary clutch cylinder (found at the side of the bell haousing of your transmission) checked. It is hard to convert your kind of transmission into cable type, cables pull while fluid type clutch push, just have it repaired.

I have a 95 3.0l and mine does this when the fuel filter or injectors are blocked. I ran a bad batch of bio diesel and had the same thing about 6 times. As soon a you take your foot of the revs the light goes back out.
