did you take the shipping tape off of the cartridge? It's usually the one covering the contacts located on the underside of the Cartridge that is inserted into the receiver of the cartridge. Other wise, you may have a bad cartridge, if so, bring it back to where you purchased it and get another one. Chris Chrisab123@live.com
It is called e5 error.
For Canon cartridges, after 4~5 refills, the color cartridge cannot be recognized by printer.
In this case...there is no solution so far...just replace with new cartridge.. that's it.
(To avoid e5 error, you need to make sure "plug out" the power, before take out your cartridge for refill. Yes... "plug out" the power cords!!!!
If you would like to save money, try refill kit by "ROADINK". Not only they are easy, but also the printing quality is good. For your better understanding pls check out my youtube video. And will see how easy ink refill can be done.
You arn't clear whether this message appeared with the old toner cartridge or just with the new cartridge. If this message just appeared with the new cartridge and not the old one, take it back and get a replacement cartridge. If the message also appeared with the old cartridge, the printer has a problem with the drum ground connector on the high voltage power supply.
* Turn on your printer and re-install the old empty printer cartridges
* Wait for the printer to finish its cycle for recognizing the printer cartridge.
* Turn off your printer and unplug it from the power source.
* Clean your printer head and the electrical connections of the new printer cartridge. Be careful if you have already tried to install this prior since the ink may run.
* Plug back the printer into the power source and turn on the printer.
* After the printer has warmed up, do the normal process of installing your new printer cartridge.
If this doesn't work, it could be that the printer cartridge is faulty. Take the printer
cartridge, its box and the receipt to the office supplies store or
computer store where you purchased this and ask for a replacement,
explaining the problem.
Hi there There are only a few steps you need to do to reset a Brother printer ink cartridge and once you do it, you will be up and printing in no time. There are actually two things that a Brother printer uses to detect ink and you can manipulate one or the other.
Things You'll Need:·Black electrical tape, masking tape or duct tape 1.
Step 1 Identify the printer If your printer uses memory, you can tell which printer you have by looking at where the cartridge goes in, if you see two "eyes" and a part of the cartridge goes in between them, follow Step 3. Otherwise, continue with Step 2. 2.
Step 2 Clear the memory by taking the cartridge out and unplugging the unit for 30 seconds. Then, plug it back in and put back in the cartridge. You may need to do this five times, as the memory holds the last five cartridges. 3.
Step 3 If the Brother printer has "eyes" where the cartridge goes, you will need to block in between them with a piece of tape so that it thinks the cartridge is always full. Simply put a piece of tape on the piece of the cartridge that goes in between the eyes to block the path of the infrared beam Please come back and just gave a vote, it will gave me some satisfaction to know am helping some one so I will keep on helping.

The electronics are bad on your compatible and your printer can't recognize it's there. Return this cartridge and get your money back. The next cartridge you buy, ask if the electronics have been tested to be functional. I recommend refils from Cartridge World or Office Depot.
