It should be located on the top right hand side, on the SIDE of the computer. It looks just like a phone jack hook up. Hope this helps. Also, if you don't have one or can't find it you can always plug in an adapter to the telephone line and then you can plug the ethernet cord into that.

I'm so sorry, I misread your question, I thought it was a laptop. But since it's a desktop the ethernet port is located on the very bottom of your computer tower. It should be right next to were you would plug in a phone line, they should be back to back. But as I said earlier, if not, get an adapter, it has two places to plug into. Hope this helps.

When the comp was built it had a v90 modem (small phone jack) and a ethernet card (larger phone-like jack). most dsl and broadband modems on the market today have a usb port on them that you can connect them from the modem to the comp. if the other two are missing. hope this helps.

Internet stopped working after lightning strike and new motherboard didn't help

Can you please describe in more detail how the internet doesn't work?
If you have the laptop and the desktop connected to the same router? If so, if you turn on Sharing, can you see the other machine? (or if you have a network attached printer, can you print to it?) If you can do other tasks with Ethernet, then it is not a computer hardware problem.
Does the cable modem have wireless and four Ethernet ports, or does it have just one Ethernet port? Do you have a separate router?

My sony pcv-rx580 wont connect with my cable modem

Did you plug the ethernet port that comes out out the cable modem into your computer's ethernet port? If so, has it ever connected? If it connected in the past, did you pay the bill? If you're getting no connection, then call the cable company and let them ping the line to see if there's a problem.

Dell optiplex GX620 desktop has an ethernet port on it, that is not an adapter, I cannot connect to the internet, I downloaded and installed a driver for a wireless ethernet adapter, but that has not...

Okay,..........

1) You can download a wireless Ethernet adapter driver all day, but if you Do Not have a wireless adapter card installed in your computer, the drivers do you no good.

Or if you do not have a wireless USB adapter plugged into a USB port.

Example of a wireless adapter card,

Example of a wireless USB device,

Example of an Ethernet adapter card,

If you are just going to hardwire the computer, just buy an Ethernet adapter card, (PCI version), and install it in your computer, (On the motherboard), in any available white PCI slot.

IF it is the Mini Tower model.

The Desktop, Small Form Factor (SFF), and Ultra Small Form Factor (SFF) computers, are too small in width for a regular size Ethernet adapter card.

They need a Low-Profile Ethernet adapter card,

This is for a Dell Optiplex GX620 Mini-Tower computer,

Scroll the page down until you come to the bold blue heading - System Board Components
This is an illustration of a Top view of the Mini-Tower's motherboard.

16 and 17 point to two PCI slots.
This is where an Ethernet adapter card that is the PCI version, will plug into.

PCI slots are White in color.
An example of a basic PCI slot, ( 3 are shown),

If you do decide to go wireless;

1) Wireless networking operates at half of the speed of wired networking.

A computer that is wired directly to an Ethernet adapter card, is twice as fast on the internet, as a computer that is connected wireless.

2) Make sure your Router is capable of wireless.
Make sure the wireless router has a built-in Modem, or that you have a separate Modem.

[ For DSL.
Phone line connects to Filter. Filter has a place for a telephone cable, and an Ethernet cable.
Ethernet cable connects to Filter, and other end connects to Modem.
Ethernet cable goes from Modem to Wireless router that does not have a built-in Modem.

OR,
Phone line connects to Filter. Ethernet cable from Filter goes directly to wireless router, that has a built-in Modem.

Computer has to have a USB wireless device, or a wireless adapter card, installed.

I found my computer cable modem. the tip is green on the cable out. Is this the modem cable the right cable?

not all modem setup are all the same. However, you should see an Ethernet port, a power cord port, and a phone cable port at the back of the modem.

You connect the modem to the computer using the ethernet port (biggest port), then connect the modem to the phone line via the phone line port and power cord to power.

Hope that works,
Regards.

Most Win98 Machines connected with Dial-up, And have an RJ11 Port (Standard Telephone) For the Verizon modem to connect to your PC you need an Ethernet Card (RJ45) You need to purchase something like this http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=3195642&st=ETHERNET+cARD&lp=4&type=product&cp=1&id=1051384122901

Ethernet card

You either have a bad ethernet port on your modem or pc. If your modem has a USB port, hook that up and run the modem disc to load the driver for USB. You may still be able to get online that way.
