If it won't read any disc you put in, consider getting a new DVD player, the eye is most likely gone bad. If it is only one disc that you can't read i would suggest a Scotch DVD Cleaner kit. Cleans and Repairs discs, helps prevent skipping and mistracking, and repairs minor surface scratches improving disc audio and image quality.
Put a video CD and see whether it reads and plays. If it also does not plays, or if video CD only plays and not DVD; in both cases; the Laser Pickup Unit is faulty and should be replaced with same type and number. OK.
Your laser that reads the discs is too dirty or is out of alignment.
Should clean laser every 20 hours of use with any DVD laser cleaner system. If you are technical you can remove parts to get to laser and clean with alcohol and Q-tip Quick fix can be compressed air when door is open
DVD's also need checked for scratches and dirt as well
