Sony MDS-JB940 Mini Disc Player

STR-DB925 digital out problem.

By Pasty - usenet poster

I am trying to copy some old LP's to my newly acquired minidisk recorder.
The problem is I cannot seem to get the optical output to work. The only
mode I can get the optical output to work is from the TV. I can't even copy
from CD's to minidisk using the optical out. I can record from CD's if I
disconnect the CD player from the amp and connect it to the minidisk, but
that is stupid.

Any suggestions?

I also have the 930. I consider it baffling that I can hook the digital
output of my CD player directly up to my MD recorder, and make digital
copies, but I can't do it through the receiver! What the hell's the
point of having MD-specific connections if you can't do this? I hate
fumbling around the back of the CD player to remove the optical out, and
plugging in a TOSlink when I want to record that way. Bad Sony! Bad!

A portable one?

I have a Sony STR-DB930 Receiver and a Sony MDS-JB940 MiniDisc deck, and I
have just tried to record the TV, Tuner, Tape etc. (all analogue sources) to
a blank MD in digital (via an optical TOSLink cable), and it did'nt work.
Not suprisingly. So unless your amp has an A/D converter fitted to it (which
seem's very unlikely) you must be mistaken.

P.S what sort of MD recorder only has Optical in ?

I am copying them in digital using the Onkyo, the Minidisk only has an
optical in so I cannot record then in analogue. What I want to know is how
do I get the Sony to produce optical out for anything except the TV?

I did'nt say you could'nt copy LP (vinyl) to MD, I just said you can't copy
them in digital.

That's not true, I don't have a digital source from TV. In any event lots of
people copy LP to minidisk. I have an Onkyo AMP and that will give me
optical out from the analogue radio.

You say your trying to copy old LP's, well vinyl's are not a digital source
so you could only copy them in analogue to get anything out of the optical
out port, you'll need to have something going into the optical in port, or
digital coaxial port.
