Dish Network DVR VIP722 freezing up during playback

My dvr vip722 freezes, & locks up. i thought I fixed the problem by unplugging it. It worked for 4 days, during which time I refused the new dvr they had sent me. I searched for an external hard drive, found one, & WAS in the process of transfering my programs to the hard drive. (already ordered a ner dvr, should be here Monday). My problem is, I can't get the dvr to work at all, after last night, & everyone tells me that all is lost. I am a HUGE boxing fan, studying to be a judge, & only have 3 out of 49 fights on the hard drive. Can anyone help, I am ready to pull my hair out! Please, I am begging, I just want to transfer my fights to the external hard drive! Thanks!

Due to the serious meltdown of this device, the hard drive may be damaged and it may be impossible to retrieve anything from it. unfortunately, all is lost. without the use of the on board programming, the hard drive in this failed unit it useless and inoperable.

    Hi,
Your receiver is having a SATA drive which is compatible with computer systems as well.
S open your box and attach that SATA drive to your computer and when u will turn the computer on you will find another drive in my computer from there u can transfer your data to external or any drive as your receiver is dead so there is no use of any external usb drive with that.

You more than likely are 100 percent correct. This is often the cause of the issue you had. The good news is that once the new receiver is in place you normally will not have any other issues as this receiver model is very reliable. One thing to consider is that Dish has some HD receivers available e.g. 222 etc that are non DVR but can act as a DVR unit with an external hard drive connected to the USB expansion port. This option gives you greater control of your recordings and eliminates the monthly DVR fee. There is a one time fee of 39.99 to make the USB port active but within the normal 24 month contract period that customers are often under one will have recovered all of the cost a the hard drive and the port activation fee. Just fodder for thought.

what is the model of your DVR? some allow you to connect to a computer
and grab the files, others require you to capture the saved video files
to your computer - you should have a USB or Firewire port on your PVR

SATA is a interface that allows you to connect a external hard drive to
your DVR. If you have it on your computer as well it should be no
problem except for the price of the hard drive.

Sorry about my earlier post. Didn't realize you didn't have DVD on it...
Its pretty simple. Get a capture card and get a set of RCA cables. Put
the cables out from the box into the capture card and your set

That SATA should allow you to do
somehow. Usually that is a type of drive port. The question at that
point would be how to access that port and whatever device you had to
    it.

I'am not to familier with DVR's but I'd be willing to bet that it's
more or less a hard drive recorder. So you should be able to access all
those...... Dude I just checked the manual online for you. 160GB hard
    drive.

First off..... there is a usb port on the front

I suggest just trying to run a usb cable from that to your usb port on
your computer and see if you can actually get into it that way. Then
you should be able to pull up the hard drive in my computer just like a
plug and play device. Then find the video files, which depends on how
the DVR saves the file type as. Then copy those files to your computer
and convert them to .avi or .mpeg or whatever you like using. Then burn
it out. If the DVR records the files as something that your computer
doesn't have a program that will read it, you'll have to find a program
that will. Just check the file extension to find out or if it gives you
the full icon for the file. Also you may have to make some adjustments
on the box itself so your computer can access it.

Ports maked 1394: if you box has this that is the number for a firewire
port. Which is more or less the same as a USB just 2x faster. You will
have to have a firewire port on your computer. (if you don't go get one
there like $30 for a decent one, it'll be worth it in the future if you
do this often). This should let you do the same as the USB port. Find
the files, plug and play style device, copy to your computer.

According to the manual the SATA drive is as stated above pretty much
for a external hard drive that supports SATA. You'd have to go into
your box and send record shows to that HD then take the HD to your
computer and copy files from it to your computer.

Try that!!!! i'd try the above to first if you have those options and
if your not sure whats what on the box check the manual for a
description of the inputs and outputs.

you can update the firmware on your box as well as any digital TV. I
just did mine for my tv a week ago. Thats really what the USB is used
for in most of those cases or to hook up a key board to it.

I had a Box just like that. I called Dish Network, and they had a Tech come out and switch the Box for no charge. I would call them again and get a new one. I know you most likely don;t want to do that, but the Box you have is no good. I hope this helps.

Change the cables on the back of the receiver. Move the cable on the in home distibution to the 3-4 out and vice versa. At TV1 change the TV itself to the channel TV2 was modulated to and see if you can watch tv error free for awahile.Do likewise on the TV2 location by going to CH3-4. Let them stay like this for an hour or so to replicate the issue. If the problem does not appear it would seem as though the receiver is fine. It also would appear that the cabling is fine also. If you are not having to reset the modulator than I would expect that the receiver is good once again. I would send a tech to your home and have him break the system down to the most basic configuration and progress from there. I personally suspect that there is a piece of hardware that is heating up and shorrting out such as a barrel, wallplate, or even an improperly prepared connector.

Hi, Mary with Dish Network Customer Service. Since the DVR is the only thing having the freezing issue, it sounds like it maybe a hard drive issue. I would recommend resetting the receiver. Unplug it from the power supply for 10 seconds and then let the receiver reboot itself. If you are still having this issue, I would recommend calling Dish Network and we will need to replace the receiver. Hard Drive issues do not resolve themselves and only get worse over time. Please let me know if I can be of further assistance.

Guest,

Are you still having problems with your DVR receiver? Try unplugging the receiver for 10 seconds and plugging back in. The receiver will reboot and acquire satellite signal. If this doesn't fix the problem there may be an issue with the receiver. I hope this helps.

Dish network dvr vip722 freezes

I am sorry to hear of your issue and I wish I was able to bear better news but I am afraid that once there is an issue with the internal hard drive there is no way to retrieve the information off of it using common methods such as using on screen prompts or at least that is what technical support has stated.I am sure you already know that Dish charges a one time fee of 39.99 to make the expansion USB port active so that what you are asking is possible. If you have not paid the 39.99 yet I would call customer service to see that if you do so and the receiver is downgraded to a non dvr unit would they transfer that fee. I expect they would not and my suggesting that is that on a non dvr unit I know you can access the information on the hard drive if the receiver is malfunctioning. I know you are probably very frustrated to say the least right now but if you are interested is discovering other possible set up configurations Dish offers a Sling box which is integrated with your internet connection and is very fascinating with the possibilities it provides. Thanks for using Fix Ya and if I can be of further assistance please let me know.
