Question about Mantis 2-Cycle Tiller

1 Answer

I have a brand new mantis 2 cycle tiller which won't start. I don't believe I'm getting a spark through the plug. Does anyone know what the gap should be for the sparkplug?

I used the spark plug rule for Dummies. I set the gap to the width of a postcard and it started right up!! They must not of set the gap right from the factory. Think I should complain? I spent 4 hours fooling with it before I came up with the solution.

I have the 2-cycle Mantis. We got a new coil because I could not get a spark. I tried to shock myself for the test by puting a bent wire into the sparkplug cap and then holding the wire and the cylinder area or any metal, no shock. The gap is as close as it gets, I might have to drill the coil to make it go closer and it seems close enough using a business card for a gauge. Could it be that a previous owner replaced the wrong flywheel so that the magnets are off?

When trying to test for spark. remove it from the cylinder hole. attach it to the plug cable (the part that normally attaches to it but you had to take off to remove the spark plug) then hold it to any steel part of the engine or a table... try not to shock yourself. that method does work, but it isn't good for you, especially if you have an unknown heart condition. if there is no spark, check the gap. usually about .2, and then try again. if there is still no spark you may need to check the timing and armiture on your engine.

Mantis tiller will not start. Cannot get primer bulb to draw fuel.I replaced all of the lines, primer bulb still won't work. Tiller will start by priming cylinder by removing spark plug. Help?

Make sure there are no leaks in the bulb. Did you reattach the fuel lijnes correctly? You should feel resistance after pushing 3 or 4 times to ensure fuel is getting to the carb. If necessary replace the bulb. Otherwise check with Mantis at or give them a call for troubleshooting assistance.

My mantis tiller 2cycle: Iput new spark plug the on&off switch ok just not getting a spark to the plug. Think its the coil ?

I would say it is the coil, if you have a multimeter you can connect it to the coil and try to start it to see if it producing voltage. Hope this helps Tim

Mantis-20 will not start - have tried new fuel?

Hi, chances are the old fuel has gone bad and caused the spark plug to get muck on it, i would go out and buy a new spark plug then leave the plug out but fitted to the ht lead, then rest the plug on a metal part of the engine then try stating it and make sure you have a good strong spark between the gap in the plug, if you have a good spark then take the plug out the ht lead but also leave it out the engine, then keep pulling the starter for about 20 to 30 seconds to ensure you have only the new fuel coming through into the combustion chamber, you should be able to smell the fuel after few seconds, then put the spark plug back in and try starting it, you should find it will now start.

let me know how you get on or if you need further assistance ok

We purchased a mantis 2 cycle garden tiller new and have only used it 3 times. it has only been used maybe 1 hour total and now it wont start at all. what can we do to get it to start?

Empty mantis fuel tank. Remove and check spark plug. Replace with Champion CJ8Y or NGK BPM7Y if necessary. Gap is .6mm - .7mm or .024" - .028". Prepare fresh fuel/oil mixture. Add fresh fuel to tank along with 2 ounces of 100% acetone (available at walmart) - this will remove deposits inside of mantis from sitting for prolonged periods. Try to start several times. If unsuccessful let mantis sit for a while. Do this several times if necessary. Eventually it will try to start. If it will not remain started then you are successful in completing the previous section. Next you need to watch this video and do what it says. It is actually quite simple.

Mantis will not start - has good fuel and new sparkplug

Check spark plug gap and functionality of throttle. I all is OK it could be flooded. If flooded. Remove spark plug and pull cord a helf a dozen time to clear it out. Replace plug with correct gap and start her up! Gap is .035-040 inches. If you don't have a guage, 40 thou is about 1/6".

What is left to do but change the flywheel?

check what they call air gap between the coil and flywheel .010-.012 gap
also be sure your flywheel is in time.
you will actually have to remove it to do this and check for the sheared key or be sure the key way aligns with the crankshaft keyway on the flywheel

Mantis 2-stroke tiller won't start

This could be one of several problems...
• Last year's fuel. Get some fresh gas.
• Every 2-stroke needs a new spark plug each year... you know what that means.
• Clogged carb jets due to storing the tiller over the winter with fuel in the system. Never, ever do that. Now you'll need to pull the carb apart and clean it. Most of the orifices are so tiny you can't see them. Good luck.
• Engine is so old the crankshaft seals have hardened with age. This is one reason no 2-stroke lasts longer than about 8 years. If the seals are shot, then it will cost more to fix than a new one costs. Time to toss it.
