The contacts could be the problem. Try using an eraser on the contacts to clean them. If you can't, then just spin the batteries in the unit to try to clean the contacts and retry.
I think the camera is working fine but is limited in night photography, in order to get the results you want you will need a better camera that is equipped with the necessary technology to get results you are after. I suggest going to camera store to speak to the attending sale man that can answer all your question and help pick out a suitable camera for the job.
