My desktop icons change to huge size automatically

All of a sudden my desktop icons will change from normal size to huge - with a half dozen icons taking up an entire 21'' monitor screen! No idea why this is happening. Can anyone help with this?

    I'm running Windows XP

So far the solution offered do not help. This problem goes away when I reboot, but returns again if the computer is left on for awhile. I'll come back to a screen with huge icons making programs unusable unless I reboot again. I'd appreciate any help in how to fix this. Thanks.

Right click on the desktop and click on properties to get to the display properties. Select the appearance tab and there should be an option for icon size. In some versions, you need to click on the settings tab and properties to set the icon size.

Please let me know if this solves the problem

Do you have a screen saver that activates when you leave the machine alone for a while?

It seems the screen saver changes your sreen resolution or icon size when activated but does not change it back. Please check that and revert...

I turned on my computer today and the icons and browser pages are bigger than normal. Can anyone tell me why this happened and how to fix?

Computers not always predictable. Meanwhile, you can decrease the size of the icons. Look in your OS help section for icon size and the answer will be there.

Or perhaps you inadvertently changed the screen resolution. Right click on screen and go into properties and look for display resolution settings.

Why is my screen opening at half screen?

not sure what half screen you are referring to

click start control panel display desktop you can select a different desktop from the drop down list
or a browse button where you can select different pictures this may vary depending on your operating system

also settings you can change the settings for more or less pixels or from the drop down list pick the appropriate level of color range or troubleshoot also select advanced then general dpi normal size, larger size or custom settings
always click APPLY after making any changes

on the top of the internet page you should see some tabs file edit view favourites tools and help click on the view tab on the drop down list you should see a zoom size %

click a different percentage also a text size you might try a different text size although this will not increase the size of the page only the text fonts inside it

if you do not see these tabs in the top toolbar

right click in the top toolbar you will see a number of toolbars and options select the menu tab this will add at it to the toolbar

or if its actually half of the screen

you will need to connect to another monitor or your television to your computer with the vga lead monitor connection

click start control panel display change display settings adjust resolution this may vary depending on your operating system

you should see a no 1 and a no 2 with detect and identify keep an eye on the screen when you select the number tabs this may vary depending on your operating system

when you select the no 2 tab this should be the extended desktop always click apply after making any changes

or click start control panel administration tools computer management device manager scroll to monitors right click select scan for hardware changes

if you can get an extended desktop your monitor is faulty

if you cant get an exended desktop

hope it helps

My laptop screen is zoomed in which is making all my icons huge. It makes my Internet pages huge also. How can I zoom out so my screen is back to normal size?

use this if using windows vista/windows 7

Set the zoom level in Magnifier. This can display objects on the screen up to sixteen times larger than actual size. Follow these steps to choose the magnification level that you want.

  1. ?id=microsoft.windows.resources.shellexecutetopiciconClick to open Magnifier.

  2. In the Scale Factor list, select a level. The zoom level in the Magnifier window will change right away. Adjust the level until it's right for you.

use this if in windows xp

  • 1 Click the "Start" button in Windows.

  • 2 Select "Control Panel."
  • 3 Select "Appearance and Themes."
  • 4 Select "Change the Screen Resolution."
  • 5 Look at the left side of the "Display Properties" dialog window. About half way down the screen you will see a box labeled "Screen resolution." There is an adjustable slider in this box.
  • 6 Move the slider left or right, by holding down the left mouse button, and moving the mouse in the appropriate direction. Release the button when the slider is pointing to the resolution you desire.
  • 7 Click the "Apply" button at the bottom right of the window. The screen will go black for an instant, and then will switch to the new resoulution. You will also see a message pop up asking you to confirm the setting. If you are unsatisfied with the appearance, then click "no," and try another resolution. Otherwise, click "yes."

  • or try the accessibility mode

    1) press start goto control panel be sure use are in classic view

    2) select accessibilty options and select display tab and uncheck the enlarged icons option and apply and click on ok. this will reset all programs to a smaller view.

Yesterday, when I powered up my laptop, everything was all of a sudden enlarged ( the desktp, icons, internet, text, e-mails, EVERYTHING). I know this is probably supposed to be some kind of useful tool...

    Hi,

Your enlarged desktop could be caused by several different things, so I will address each one in the order of likelihood of each one:

    1. You may have accidentally changed your Display Settings.

Right-click on your desktop and select Personalize. Scroll down and click on Display Settings. Ensure that your Monitor Resolution is set for the maximum. If not, use your mouse to move the slider bar all the way to the right.

    2. You may have accidentally changed the size of text and icons.

Right-click on your desktop and select Personalize. In the bottom left-hand corner, select Ease of Access. About half way down the screen, select Make the computer easier to see. Click on Change the size of text and icons about half way down the screen. If it is not selected, chose the default scale.

    3. You may have accidentally turned on the Magnifier.

Right-click on your desktop and select Personalize. In the bottom left-hand corner, select Ease of Access. About half way down the screen, select Make the computer easier to see. About half way down the screen, uncheck the Turn on Magnifier.

To turn off the On-Screen Keyboard on start-up,
right-click on your desktop and select Personalize. In the bottom left-hand corner, select Ease of Access. About half way down, select Use the computer without a mouse or keyboard. Unselect Use On-Screen Keyboard.

To turn off the Narrator on start-up, right-click on your desktop and select Personalize. In the bottom left-hand corner, select Ease of Access. About a third of the way down, select Use the computer without a display. Unselect Turn on Narrator.

I hope this helps. If so, please remember to rate my post.

    Thanks!
