Question about Washing Machines

5 Answers

I have a Hoover AAA160 front loader. The tub started making a lot of noise over the last 2 months. Turning it by hand it feels like the bearings are a bit rough but it turns with no effort. Now it refuses to turn on the high speed rinse cycle (the motor turns at slow speed but when it tries to go faster it seems to stall and only progress about 5 degrees of motion). Water seems to flow OK into and out of the machine. The belt seems OK. Any ideas what is wrong? Thanks

I don't think it is possible to buy a bearing for this type of machine.  The tub etc. is all one single unit that costs about $250.  I can't understand why the motor can turn fine at low speed but fails to get going at all at high speed.  Although the bearings sound rough the tub turns with no effort at all.

When you say transmission does that mean a change to the whole motor or is there a gear/clutch assembly that can be changed?  Thanks

  • Dr No Clue Mar 07, 2009

Does anybody think it is worth trying to change the motor or transmission or given that the bearing seems rough is it simply time for a new machine?

Yes, it would still be worthwhile changing the transmission - if the motor is still working, and the tub still turns quite freely. It's a lot cheaper than a new machine.

Please rate if this is helpful :)

As per the replacement its worth checking the motor coupler which helps to spin the motor .as if that motor coupler is cracked or broken this exact same problem happens which you are facing.also the bearings problem is applicable if only you see that the bearings are rusted just check out in the motors back area the bearings are easily seen if they feel rusted pour some water on the bearings if the colour comes of water comes brown then the bearing is faulty.but if this is the problem of coupler or bearings then its worth getting it fixed but if the problem is motor and tub lower assemly going faulty or misallighned.and if the machine is very old then its quite advisable that you go for new machine.because in washing machine once the major problem is started then even after reparing some how any other type of problem continues to occur .
thanks,

It sounds like either the spin bearings are bad or something is stuck between the tubs. When something gets stuck between the tubs it will cause the belts to burn. Lift the lid & hold your hand flat to feel between the tub cover & the top of the spin basket, if something is stuck it usually hangs up between the tub cover & spin basket.
The other possibility would be the transmission.

Hope this helps.

You need to replace the drum bearing.

When it is like that you usually need to replace the drum bearing.

If the tub recently started making a lot of noise, and you can feel that the bearing had too much play when spinning by hand, that means that the drum bearing needed to be replaced.

After two months the drum bearing had gone completely, and now the worn drum bearing wont turn the drum when on high speed.

You can find the replacement part and the schematics entering model number here.

Note: a defective Motor Control unit can also cause the appliance not spinning on rinse, but in that case you do not have noise and machine shaking, from description it looks more like a defective drum bearing.

To find out you need to remove the machine back panel and accees the drum bearing, if drum bearing , eventually motor coupler and clutch if present as single parts, and motor control unit are fine, then only in that case replace main control board. Always better testing electronic parts before replacement.

Most probably you need to replace the drum bearing.

You can also find replacement parts here.

Often when we talk about drum bearing you have to replace the drum bearing spider.

Regarding parts , if you give me the complete model number from service tag I can find all parts for your appliance.

If this is the drum bearing , and the machine is less than three years old , it is also a good idea calling the manufacturer at the number listed on the user manual, there are parts that are covered for more than one years.

Re: Does anybody think it is worth trying to change the motor or
transmission or given that the bearing seems rough is it simply time
    for a new machine?

A: a faulty motor is rather unlikely, you can also see if it is the bearing by accessing it and spinning drum by hand, also contact manufacturer to see what they think.

I can be more specific on motor coupler and other parts if you give me the model number as on service tag.

    Thanks.

Why does my washer (maytag mah5500bww front loader) make noise during the wash/rinse cycles but not during the spin.?

The noise could be from a loose wire harness, plastic purse-lock wire harness retainer on the upper hose hitting the top cover ir a plastic injector mold standoff on the outer tub bearing housing, also a flat spot in the belt could cause a tapping noise. Something between the outer tub and wash basket. I have had to remove items lodged in the drain tube between the pump and tub, like bra under wires. Sometimes you can squeeze the tube and feel objects the ate lodged. I always take the tube off the tub side and run my finger all the way down to the pump impeller to make sure. I also check the I can spin the impeller and the nothing is in the pump. Hard to say with out being there. Where do you think the noise is coming from top , bottom , left , or right side?

Sounds very much like the drum bearings have failed. It is not a DIY job I'm afraid. Up to date washing machines are now impossible to actually replace bearings and only way to repair is to replace inner and outer drum assembly. This is a 1/2 a day job at the least to a professional. Older machines.....you can replace the bearings but this still involves removing the outer drum ou from under the washing machine, and the a very normal bearing removal and replacement procedure. Make sure the bearings are knocked in very straight and not on the skew. Good luck

I have a kenmore frontloading washer, during the spin cycle a noise like grinding can be heard, grinding can also be heard when turning drum by hand...help

its the drum bearings that support the inner drum, you need to replace these bearings, the problem with this is it was manufactured by frigidaire for kenmore and you cant just buy the inner bearing and lip seal as it comes with the outer rear half of the outer.tub where as with maytag neptune or whirlpool duet you can drive these bearin gs out and re-use the tub half, but you can't buy just the bearings and seal for a frigidaire front loader

I feel you need fix the root cause a Leaky Tub Seal.

Google this

FAV6800A/FAV9800A Outer Tub bearing replacement

See what is involved and iff you decide to go forward I will help on that forum. This forum is just to difficult to work in with no edit feature.

The Clicking sound may be a broken Large Wrap spring.

Place the washer with a load in the wash basket start a Spin Only cycle and release the washer top jus high enough to observe wash basket Spin action. There may be none to very little. If you drop the Clutch Pulley out I believe you will find much rust. You have to replace that tub seal and I would do a complete outer tub rebuild. Without replacing the Clutch Pulley around $60 for bearings, Tub and Seal Tranny O-ring.

IF YOU REACH IN THE TUB AND SPIN THE BASKET BY HAND IT SHOULD BE SILENT. IF THERE IS NOISE THIS WOULD BE A TUB BEARING. EXPENSIVE TO REPAIR EVEN THO THE REAR TUB SHELL IS A PART ONLY WARRANTY FOR TEN YEARS MOST OF THE TIME. OVER PROBLEMS CAN BE A STRUT, OR THINGS IN THE PUMP. IF IT IS THE TUB BEARING YOU MAY NOT BE ABLE TO TALK TO SOME ONE IN THE SAME ROOM WHEN IT IS SPINNING. THIS PROBLEM NEEDS ATTENTION SOON. LET ME KNOW IF I CAN FUTHER ASSIST YOU.

Makes a lot of noise while spinning.

FIrst look for something between the inner and outer tub, like a screw nail or bobby pin.

It could also be a tub bearing.

is it a front loader, or top loader. How old, make, model?

need more info

then feel free to ask more questions.
