I plugged it into the computer today and it said not recognised. It won't connect to itunes and its not located in my computer. Also, because it says connected, it won't switch on or off.

Hi,
Welcome to Fixya. The "the USB device attached has malfunctioned" is a common issue of a usb device that is connected to the computer. If you can still use the ipod properly it seems that there is something that has been detect by windows that is malfunctioning on the iPod when you connect it. There are only 3 possible reasons. First is the cable that you are using and the other one is the port on the ipod where you connect the usb cable and the 3rd is the motherboard needs to be rebooted. You can try to change the usb cable or try to use the steps below and see if you will encounter the same error.
Simply UNPLUG YOUR COMPUTER FROM THE POWER SUPPLY. Yes that's it! Note that this does not mean just turning off your computer because modern computers don't really turn off when you press the power button as the motherboard still gets power. First to explain, the motherboard is where all of hardware of the computer is connected to, including the USB ports. Sometimes the motherboard needs to be "rebooted" also because something can go wrong, i.e. all your USB ports suddenly stop working. The small microprocessor on the motherboard will reload the drivers and your USB ports should be back to recognizing all devices! So first turn off your computer using Shut Down or pressing the power button and then UNPLUG it from the wall outlet. Let it sit for about a minute and then plug it back in.
If you are using a laptop you need to remove the battery to drain the power on the motherboard. Please let me know what happen so that we can continue troubleshooting.

If you have questions please let me know. Thanks

Everytime i plug in my ipod its not showing that it's connected

Okay, don't freak out. What we'll do is systematically check the different points where a problem could be hiding, correct it or eliminate it, and then you can return to your normal iPodding. This could be no big deal so let's check the small stuff first, then we'll test the software.

Before we go ahead and troubleshoot your problem, lets quickly run through this checklist, just to make sure it is not something obvious:

  • Check your connections (USB fully plugged in? iPod connected?).
  • Plug the iPod directly into the computer (don't use a USB hub).
  • Try a different USB port.
  • Use a different cable (ask a friend if you can borrow their USB cable).
  • Remove all the other USB connections (sometimes other USB devices can cause a conflict).
  • Try this:
    • Unplug your iPod
    • Close all programs that are currently running.
    • Plug in your iPod.
    • Open iTunes.
  • Try rebooting the computer

Ipod is Not Being Recognized by Computer

First ipod cables only work on ipod.
Second if you bent the connections (even just one) so that it is not connecting inside your ipod you will need to get that fixed.
You should reboot your computer and try again first though.

Computer turning off when iPod plugged in.

First, does this only happen on your computer, or all computers you connect it to? If you have a second computer or a friend who will let you test on their's, then try it on another computer. If it affects it the same way it is most likely the hard drive (since there was a disk error message) or a malfunction in it's logic board. If it works fine on other computers, then I'd try updating the firmware and drivers. Here is a firmware for most ipods. http://drivers.softpedia.com/get/FIRMWARE/Others/Apple-iPod-Firmware-20060628.shtml

My ipod shuffle usb is not being read by any computers

Never discount the possibility of a simple poor electrical connection (or a busted usb plug on the shuffle - you didnt yank at it, did you?)

Try to swab out the inside of the usb plug on the shuffle.. 99% rubbing alchohol is best. A qtip might fit, if squashed a bit
