Your TV most likely has one or more possible problems.

Problem #1: Convergence Chip Failure ( common problem )

Here are some of the most common symptoms and example photos of a convergence problem

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the tv settings then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move them up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directions your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a Partial convergence problem - 2c07611.pnglem.

You need to replace the convergence chips and convergence resistors. Check the site www.TvRepairKits.com. They have put together a kits for most models. If you don't see a kit for your set send them a quick note and they will put one together for you. Their kits include a photo instruction guide, original OEM Sanyo STK chips, convergence resistors, pico fuses, etc.

Problem #2 CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

What you will need to do is replace the coolant and clean the crt. You can get a repair kit from www.TvRepairKits.com that includes replacement coolant, photos. instructions, etc.

We have the same thing, had Sears TV repairman look at the set. He said it was convergence and that it would cost over $500.00 to replace the parts. And he charged $91.00 for the service call. Needless to say, we did not have him repair it, that's why I'm online now trying to figure something out.

Intermittent blue streak on the right side of the screen.

amikeq,

You may be experiencing the beginings of a failing convergence system. To align the beam there are two ICs which take the stored positions, set by you during a convergence alignment, and move the beams to line up on the green beam for a good picture. When the ICs fail your set will look 3D but in your case you may just be seeing a partial and intermittent failure exposing the blue beam momentarily. I have a tip at http://www.fixya.com/support/r4220499-change_projection_tv_convergence_ics which explains all this and how to repair the unit as well as where to get the parts at the best price.

Thanks for using FixYa and for the great rating. Please consider a testimonial. Thank you.

You will need to replace your two convergence I.C.s.They are two large IC mounted on a large aluminum heat sink.Replace both, look for any burned resistors near them, replace those if needed, and readjust your convergence. Good Luck

Sony KP-53S65. Only have the green lens working. Blue and Red out. Everything else seems OK. What's going on with it?

mrrcody56,

If you have a picture, but only in green, I would try turning up the drive for the red and blue guns. They have probably changed and need a boost. This does mean that the CRTs are dying and may not have too much time left.

To turn up the drive first remove the back cover on the bottom. You will have to work on this unit live so be very careful and do not touch anything other than what I tell you.

Look at the space above the main circuit board. Somewhere across the beam supporting the CRTs you will see a square box with 6 controls (shafts). You can locate the box if you follow the wires from the flyback to the box. The flyback is located on the right rear corner and produces the high voltage. It will have 4 large red rubber wires coming out of it. Three go to the focus divider block (the box in question) then they go on to the crts (red, green, blue).

Once you locate the focus divider look at it closely. The focus controls are on top and the drives are on the bottom. They should be marked red, green and blue. You want to turn up the red and blue. Tune a picture with as much black as possible. While watching it turn up the red until you see a red tint or streak then turn down until it just disappears. Do the same with the blue. You may want to touch up the green also.

If the set is working OK your picture should look normal.

Thanks for using FixYa and for the generous rating.
