Acer AM1201 SATA Optical Drive Installation

Hi,

I want to install an additional DVDRW drive on an Acer AM1201 desktop. What I want to know is if the motherboard's existing SATA optical drive cable can also be used for a second drive or if I have to purchase another one to attach to the motherboard.

Also can someone provide instructions, preferably via pictures or video, exactly how to install the second SATA optical drive properly so that there is no error made?

Thanks

Normally when u purchase the SATA DVDRW, they also provides u the SATA data cable...

Installation is very simple, just plug the data cable and power cable, power on your pc. That's all.

What is the specific problem you have connecting this internal drive? This is an internal SATA optical drive for a desktop with a standard 5 1/4" drive opening. Many optical drives ship as OEM devices; you will need to reuse the data and power cable from a previous drive or purchase a SATA data cable (7 pin). A locking cable can help keep the cable connected to the drive. If your power supply (PSU) doesn't have SATA power connectors (15 pin), you will need an IDE to SATA adapter. Most online cable shops have the best prices for these.

If your computer doesn't have a SATA port available, you need to add a controller card or use a SATA to IDE converter.

If your case is a ultra-small form factor, you may have a modified optical drive opening. These cases use a slim optical drive (mostly sold as laptop drives). In that case, get an external 5 1/4" enclosure or a USB to SATA adapter.

If you have the drive in the computer, press the Eject button. If that works, then the power cable to the drive is fine. Check the data cable to both the drive and the motherboard. My old computer had SATA connections on the motherboard that would not allow the cable to lock. When I bumped anything in the case, I had to check that the cable was re-secured.

What OS are you using? For most versions of Windows, your OS should have the correct driver or find it with Windows Update (if the computer is on the network). Try launching Windows Update and checking if an optional driver is waiting to be installed. I don't know if Unix or Mac OSX drivers exist for this drive. You may need a different optical drive.

The drive should now be listed in the storage devices (Computer/My Computer). If you can't read files, try another disk. If it still doesn't work, try cleaning the lens or a different drive. Some drives are sensitive to the power supply for burning optical discs.

I hope these suggestions help. Please add a comment with the specific problem and case/OS that you are using for additional solutions.

After details on the power cable, and data cable, the Optical Drive is the first drive listed.

Examples of a SATA data cable, and it's connector; and a SATA data cable connector on the motherboard,

Note the L-shaped opening in the SATA data cable's connector.
Lines up with an L-shape on the motherboard connector.
ONE style of SATA motherboard connector is shown.

Your SATA motherboard connector may differ in appearance. Still has an L-shape in it, though.

(Hold the SATA cable connector in your hand, look at the connector.
If you turn a capital L to the LEFT, and turn OVER, that is the correct position to install the cable, in.
_____I, then turn over )

SOME SATA cable connectors have a Lock on them.
Some are like a tab you press down, others are like a small 'bulb, that you press down on. Suggest use your thumb.

Depress Lock to Install cable, and to Remove cable.

Between a SATA data cable's connector, and a SATA power cable's connector; a SATA power cable connector is Larger.

SATA data cable connector has 7-pins.
SATA power cable connector has 15-pins.
Example of a SATA power cable,

Depress the Drive Release Latch, slide the drive towards the Back of the computer, lift up slightly to remove SATA data cable, and SATA power cable; THEN remove optical drive.

How to connect a cd rom/dvd

If your CD / DVD is powered on Ok then you are missing the data cable connection which will be either a SATA (small connector) or IDE (much larger connector) both of which plug in to your motherboard....Look at the CD / DVD and try to identify which type of connector you are missing then look for an unconnected cable of the same type within your case.

I want to install a CD/DVD RW drive. This is in addition to the installed CD/DVD already in place. The new drive has a SATA connection on the back, and the only available connector is an IDE connector....

There are IDE to SATA adapters and cables, such as this one linked below. IDE to SATA Adapter
You would simply plug this adapter into the available IDE connection on your motherboard, then use the SATA data and power cable to connect from the adapter to the CD/DVD drive. You can look around online for similar products, but they should get the job done!

If it's like the CMM570-AP002 I've seen, your system has enough spare SATA ports and power connectors for two additional drives. With SATA you don't have to worry about master/slave drives like you did with IDE; just plug each drive into a separate SATA port.

Installation is pretty simple and straightforward, and you can use the existing drives as guides. If it stops booting after installation, check the BIOS and make sure it's still trying to boot from the right hard drive. If you haven't done it before, consider looking up dedicated guides to drive installation and BIOS editing.

The problem is that XPinstallation CD does not have a SATA driver, unless you have a SATA drive on adisk etc. and can install the driver when XP asks for a hard drive driver then,XP cannot detect the hard disk and therefore won't install XP. The FIX. Go into the BIOS anddisable the SATA drive (enable IDE emulation), this will make XP think it is aIDE/PATA hard disk. Then you can install XP normally. When Windows hasbeen installed then install all the device drivers (including the SATA driver),then shut down and boot up and got into the BIOS and enable the SATA drive.

Sata hard drive could not be detected during win xp installation in acer aspire M3600

It could only be a limited number of problems:

1. SATA drive is not connected to the primary port
2. SATA cable is faulty
3. SATA drive is faulty

The most common solution is to move the cable to the primary/first port
