Hi,

There are numerous common dialog boxes in windows, please note i am very specific to windows (and not VB since VB has difference nominclature for common dialog boxes)

following are some windows common dialog boxes:

  1. UserInput dialog box: to fetch user input.
  2. Alert dialog box: to display some alert information to the user.
  3. File Open Dialog Box: to browse and open file from selected filesystem.
  4. FileSave dialogbox: to save a file to a filesystem on selected path.
  5. Print dialog box: to setup printer preferences and print setting commands routing to printer.

Add Specific Folders to the Open Dialog Box


When you use certain Windows applications (such as Notepad) to open a file, on the left side of the Open dialog box are a group of icons and folders (such as My Documents, My Recent Documents, Desktop, My Computer, and My Network) to which you can navigate to open files.
Good idea, bad implementation. Do you really keep documents in My Computer? Unlikely, at best. It would be much more helpful if you could list only those folders that you use, and if you could choose to put any folder there, not just ones XP decides you need.
In fact, you can do it, with a Registry hack. It'll let you put just the folders of your choosing on the left side of the Open dialog box. Note that when you do this, it will affect XP applications such as Notepad and Paint that use the Open and Save common dialog boxes. However, it won't affect Microsoft Office applications and other applications that don't use the common dialog boxes.
TIP: If you want to change the dialog "frequently used" folders for Microsoft Word, try Woody Leonhard's Place Bar Customizer, one of many useful utilities from http://www.wopr.com/.
Run the Registry Editor and go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\comdlg32. This is the key that determines how common dialog boxes are handled. You're going to create a subkey that will create a customized location for the folders, and then give that subkey a series of values, each of which will define a folder location.
To start, create a new subkey underneath HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\comdlg32 called Placesbar, and create a String value for it named Place0. Give Place0 a value of the topmost folder that you want to appear on the Open dialog box-e.g., C:\Projects.
Next, create another String value for Placesbar called Place1. Give it a value of the second folder that you want to appear on the Open dialog box. You can put up to five icons on the Open dialog box, so create new String values up to Place4 and give them values as outlined in the previous steps. When you're done, exit the Registry. You won't have to reboot for the changes to take effect
If you want no folders to appear in common open dialog boxes, you can do that as well. In HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\comdlg32 create a new DWORD value called NoPlacesBar and give it a value of 1. Exit the Registry. If you want the folders back, either delete NoPlacesBar or give it a value of 0.
Turn Off System Beeps
To me, system beeps that my PC makes when it encounters certain system errors are like balloon tips-gnat-like annoyances that I can do without. So I turn them off using a Registry hack. Run the Registry Editor, go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Sound, and find the Beep and ExtendedSounds String values. Set each value to No. Exit the Registry and reboot. The beeps will no longer sound.

The PowerPoint software program allows you to create slide presentations that can be viewed on any computer.


While some graphic artists specialize in developing compelling presentations, anyone can develop a PowerPoint slide presentation that is attractive and readable.

Follow these steps to develop your own slide show.


Open your PowerPoint program. When the dialog box opens, click on the "Blank Presentation" option.


Choose an "AutoLayout" format.

Begin with the title slide layout, which is the first one on the left. Click "OK," and you will have a title slide to work with.


Add text to your slide by clicking in the title text box and typing a title.

Do the same thing in the subtitle box.


Create another slide by clicking the "New Slide" button on the Common Tasks toolbar.

When the AutoLayout dialog box appears, choose a layout for this slide.


Keep adding new slides until your presentation is complete.

Move from slide to slide by clicking the button on the lower-right corner of the PowerPoint window.


Clicking the button with the upward-pointing arrows will take you to the previous slide, and clicking the button with the downward-pointing arrows will take you to the next slide.


Save your presentation. Click the "File" menu and then click "Save As."


A dialog box will appear, and you'll be able to type in a name for your presentation.

The presentation will be saved to your hard drive.

I am tying to set up yahoo account on thunderbird. i can send email but not receive.. i have tried changing server settings and port settings


Much more common is a sending issue. Often you have to send through your ISP server, contact them for what that server is, if you have sending issues.

I found directions for Outlook, which should be similar to Thunderbird:

Note: You must be a Yahoo! Mail Plus user to read Yahoo! Mail in an email reader program such as Microsoft Outlook. Click here for information about subscribing to Yahoo! Mail Plus.
To read your Yahoo! Mail Plus using Microsoft Outlook 2002 or 2003, follow these steps:
  1. From the Tools menu, select Email Accounts.
  2. Select Add a new email account and click Next.
  3. Select POP3 and click Next.
  4. Enter the following information:
    • User Information

      Your Name: Type your name as you'd like it to appear when you send an email message.

      E-Mail Address: Type your Yahoo! Mail Plus email address (for example, testing80@yahoo.com).
    • Server Information

      Incoming mail server (POP3): Type plus.pop.mail.yahoo.com.

      Outgoing mail server (SMTP): Type plus.smtp.mail.yahoo.com.
    • Login Information

      User Name: Type your Yahoo! ID (your email address without the "@yahoo.com").

      Password: Type your Yahoo! password.

    • If you want to save your Yahoo! Mail messages on both the Yahoo! Mail server and on your computer, select the Leave a copy of messages on the server checkbox. If you want your messages to be deleted from the Yahoo! server once Outlook has downloaded them onto your computer, leave the box unchecked.

      Note: After your messages are deleted from the server, we cannot retrieve them.
  8. Click OK to close the Internet E-mail Settings dialog box.
  9. Click Finish to close the Add New E-mail Account dialog box.
  10. Click Close to close the Account Settings dialog box.
Troubleshooting tips
If you still can't send Yahoo! Mail from Outlook, you might be accessing the Internet through an ISP that is blocking the SMTP port. If this is the case, try using port 587 when sending email via Yahoo!'s SMTP server. To make this change:
  1. From the Tools menu, select Account Settings. The Account Settings dialog box appears.
  2. Select your Yahoo! Mail Plus account and click Properties. The Change E-mail Account dialog box appears.
  3. Click More Settings. The Internet E-mail Settings dialog box appears.
  4. Click the Advanced tab.
  5. In the Outgoing Server (SMTP) box, type 587.
  6. Click Apply, and then click OK to close the Internet E-mail Settings dialog box.

When installing a new printer with the Add Printer Wizard, you can choose between adding a local printer (one that's directly cabled to your computer through one of the ports) or a network printer (a printer that's connected to your network with an Ethernet connection, just as your computer is connected to the LAN).
To install a new local printer with the Add Printer Wizard, follow these steps:
1. Click the Start button on the Windows taskbar and then click Control Panel on the right side of the Start menu.

  1. Click Start and then click Run.
  2. In the Open box, type Regedit and then click OK.
  3. Locate and select the following key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\9.0\Common
  4. Select the UserData DWORD value for the above key.
  5. On the Edit menu, click Rename.
  6. Rename the UserData DWORD value to UserDataOld.
  7. Find the following key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\9.0\Common
  8. Find the following value: OSAShortcut. If it does not exist, create it. On the Edit menu, click New and then click Dword. Name the value OSAShortcut, and then set the value to 1.
  9. On the Registry menu, click Exit.
  10. Start any Office program.NOTE: The same Windows Installer dialog boxes appear one more time.

  11. When you are prompted, type your name and initials in the User Name dialog box, and then click OK.

I have a H-P Compaq Presario A900 Notebook PC and it came with a Canon Pixma MX310 all in one printer. It has windows vista 2007 on it (computer) and one of the instructions says to open the vista program...


To install the printer do this:
