Sony ECM719 Consumer Microphone

Assistance with Sony ECM 719

By Bomber - usenet poster

I just bought one of these in Japan and when I got it home I noticed
the red led light only flashes once briefly when you flick the plug in
power switch to On. The led doesn't appear to stay on. The mic is
working but it is very low level. It doesn't make any difference to the
level whether plug in power is on or off. Maybe my iRiver iHP-140
doesn't support plug in power. I thought the battery might be flat so I
got a new battery - same story. I even tried taking the battery out and
the level is still the same. When the new battery is in, the led is
actually very faintly lit. At first I thought this was just the plastic
color from the unlit red led but it goes clear when I take the battery
out. It is strange that it would be so faintly lit with a fresh
battery. I'm not sure if it is faulty and I can't go back to the shop
as I am not in Japan anymore.

Amy thoughts or similar experiences from anyone?

Cheers!

That's a relief to hear that it is working normally. I was given a
manual in Japanese so I wasn't aware of the LED function. When I say it
is dimly lit, I mean really, really feint. It is almost imperceptible
that it is on, there is a tiny hint of red. You have to angle the unit
a certain way to see it and it goes clear if you take the battery out
so it is definately coming from the battery.

Anyway thanks for the help and info.

Cheers!

The mics use almost zero power off the battery or plug-in-power jack,
the LED uses far more, way way more, many times more power than the mic

So they made the LED to blink when you power on just to show the battery
is still good (Your battery can easily last almost it's rated shelf
life) and that's all.

However the LED being faintly lit with a new battery That is
something I've never seen before, suggests a problem NOTE: May be normal
but it SUGGESTS

The lamp is not a running lamp, but a 'battery check' lamp -- it flashes
briefly when the switch is first turned on [if the battery is OK].
